Some routes in Manhattan were stitched together from separate route authority segments. In particular some Fifth Avenue routes relied on route authority granted by the state, not by the Board of Estimate. The companies used route designations without the familiar "M" prefix used by the Board of Estimate, instead relying on numbering their own routes sequentially.
