Even on the S44 at the terminal many (mostly teenagers, with cell phones and fancy headphones) just walk on. They used to explain to the driver or ask for a ride, now most just walk on like it's their right to a free ride. I was once waiting for a ferry-bound S44 at Bard Av. A woman was waiting too, then a fellow came by to wait. When the bus arrived he boarded first, though he knew we were waiting longer, and didn't pay, just walked right on. The drivers apparently have been told not to say anything or challenge anyone. And very often the free riders take the seats and the paying customers have to stand! |
