There was no political message there.

WMATA's inept management has justifiably earned its share of criticism over the years (including from its Board), though we have seen improvements too.

That isn't political. But that's not what I meant either. Even if it was by implication, there's nothing wrong with it.

Mr. Phanstiel presented a picture of WMATA to the public that could be supported by an outstanding customer experience, or undermined by a lousy one.

Put it another way. I'm going to exaggerate a little to make the point clear. Suppose he had been working his ass off, doing what he did, at New York City Tansit in the 1970s (no one here will disagree the subway system was in the crapper for a while there) The customer gets on a train and his ride is the opposite of the image Cody's trying to project.

The best way to honor this guy, besides the scholarships and other things (which are not bad things at all) is to work hard to make the customer's experience as wonderful as you can possibly achieve. No only does that honor him, it honors current employees and it honors the taxpayers who paid for the system.

Not at all. You haven't considered the possibilities.

"WMATA has an obligation to do run its operation well every day, regardless of what the PR office has to say,"
Agreed.

"and does so"

Very poorly until its recent improvements, and it still hiccups now and then. A formal quality improvement program in the Deming/Ishikawa model might help. You could name the prize for most improved WMATA organizational unit after him. Even make an annual trophy out of it. Or do something else to emphasize the rewards that come from doing excellent work, rather than taking for granted that people "have to do it."

I believe I am more familiar with the daily operations of the WMATA system than you are. You may choose to believe the media hype, but I don't believe every last word I read in the Washington Post or hear on WTOP Radio. The issues WMATA currently faces are complex and not on any one level of personell. That said, overall, the service runs well and takes people where they want to go in a safe and reliable manner. I don't know if you've ever worked in public transit, but in the customer service realm, no news is good news. People only talk about the service when there are problems, and that is when the media picks up on it. You seem to listen in then, but I can assure you that most of the time, things go just fine.

You don't know what and how the managers do what they do, you don't know why the Board was upset and why they took the actions they did. Your rigidity makes it difficult for anyone to anticipate that you'll supply anything except a stereotyped response. I'm open-minded to you, but you fight it. Your rigidity comes from a narrowness of interest, an obsession over a limited field of facts and lack of general knowledge. That's what makes you closed-minded.

John is very right when he says you have taken a perfectly civil thread about a former WMATA employee who has passed away and have used it as a venue to remind us of your opinions of WMATA and other posters on this board. You have made several offensive comments to me in this thread, as well as what I can see other people viewing as offensive comments towards them. Just stop with this BS already and stop posting to this thread. Considering all the remarks you make about how other people need to change your behavior, I personally think many more people on this board think your behavior is in need of change. Usually, when it is one against many on an issue like this, the one should consider stepping back and reconsidering his or her actions. When you stick to the actual issues being discussed in a thread, don't post like an expert when posting about topics you know nothing about, and aren't trying to run a free psycology service over the message board, your posts are quite enjoyable. Otherwise, you just make yourself look like a fool in my humble opinion.
