Whether you approve or not, people use them. You are living in the wrong part of the country if you don't want to hear them.

There was a lot of construction going on in various parts of the District - traffic was a nightmare.

I suggested something similar possibly as part of a total renumbering scheme of all transit lines (bus and rail) in the DC metro area:

1: Shady Grove-Glenmont
2: Grosvenor-Silver Spring
3: Dulles-Stadium-Armory
4: Vienna-New Carrollton
5: WFC-Largo
6: Franconia-Springfield-Largo
7: Franconia-Springfield-Greenbelt
8: Huntington-Mount Vernon Square/Fort Totten
9: Branch Avenue-Greenbelt

WMATA really needs to implement a variation of the NY-style letter/trunk route designations. For example:

A (Red): Shady Grove/Glenmont (normal route)
F (Red): Shady Grove/Silver Spring (midday short-line)
G (Red): Grosvenor/Glenmont (rush hour short-line)
H (Red): Grosvenor/Silver Spring (special short-line)
N (Red): Medical Center/Union Station (special short-line)

B (Blue): Largo/Franconia-Springfield (normal route)
Q (Blue): Rosslyn or Foggy Bottom/Eastern Market or Stadium-Armory (special short-line)

C (Green): Greenbelt/Branch Av (normal route)
R (Green): Ft. Totten/Anacostia (special short-line)

D (Orange): Vienna/New Carrollton (normal route)
J (Orange): West Falls Church/Largo (rush hour extra)
T (Orange): Ballston/Stadium-Armory (special short-line)

E (Yellow): Ft. Totten/Huntington (normal route)
K (Yellow): Mt. Vernon Sq./Huntington (rush hour short-line)
L (Yellow): Greenbelt/Franconia-Springfield (rush hour extra)

M (Silver): Dulles/Stadium-Armory (normal route)

N, Q, R and T are not feasible because of the lack of pocket tracks for turning trains.

You forgot about the special service from Mt. Vernon Square to Franconia-Springfield after events at the Verizon Center.

If the pocket track east of the Tysons East (Tysons McLean) station hadn't been deleted to reduce costs I would add a all day short turn running between Tysons East (Tysons McLean) and Ashburn.

Why did I suspect that photo was going to wind up in that post?? ;-)

I wish I had the origenal slide along with a silde i took in 1975 of an 8 car test train in Metro Center.

MBTA's brain trust seems to only care about the Red and Orange lines. The Green line has always been the red-headed step child. The Silver line bus was loudly protested against when put on the table, and denounced by residents after it was decided upon. The public hearings were nothing more than a sham to make it look like they were "sensitive" to the community. The fact was they had already decided that rail was a non-starter because the sections of town along the Washington Street coridor was (at the time) not a particularly desirable part of town...in spite of all the renovation going on in the South End along Tremont from the Mass Pike to Mass Av. (I was one of the uppity South Enders leading the call for either subway or street rail.) In the years since, that whole area is now booming, but not reaching its full potential because of the damn Silver Lie.

N, Q and R already exist as the underground-only snow routes. They would be used in special circumstances, such as weather. There would be no need for the Verizon Specials per se: Just run trains signed 'L' heading south.

Here's the March 29, 1976, pocket map. The red and orange colors are off and Union Station is placed in a more prominent but out of order location on the time/fare chart.

It is noteworthy that those pamphlets were printed in WMATA's in house printing plant. To this day the maps aboard the trains are printed by an outside contractor. The maps aboard the trains were not printed using a four color printing process but use individual plates for each of the eight colors on the map. The gray for the jurisdictional borders and the Capitol Beltway are rendered from the black plate using a halftone screen on the earlier maps, later maps used a ninth plate for the gray.
