It is noteworthy that those pamphlets were printed in WMATA's in house printing plant. To this day the maps aboard the trains are printed by an outside contractor. The maps aboard the trains were not printed using a four color printing process but use individual plates for each of the eight colors on the map. The gray for the jurisdictional borders and the Capitol Beltway are rendered from the black plate using a halftone screen on the earlier maps, later maps used a ninth plate for the gray.
