why would the passenger cabs need power when there are no passengers?

There is no freeze ups happening in the summer, fall, spring and all but a few winter days

It's already been explained in this thread...once the Sunnyside station opens up, as well as ESA, the whole reason for HP Avenue service will be minimized exponentially.

Yes, there is already a large transfer back and forth at Jamaica already to and from HP Ave trains, mostly for people that need the East Side. Many West Side diesel people get OFF at Jamaica for Penn trains, and many electric people get ON HP Ave trains at Jamaica.
If you are a diesel branch person bound for the west side, you are not staying on at Jamaica and going to HP Ave. And for electric people, it's easier to get to the east side if you get off at Jamaica and get a HP ave train. THAT is why it's busy at HP ave in the evening, as then the reverse is true.

LIC HAS to be used, as the Montauk Branches original charter REQUIRES passenger service to traverse the Montauk Branch. The Montauk Branch can't serve HP Ave, so LIC wins. If one closes it will be HP Ave not LIC. I don't see them keeping both open after ESA, as remember, even if the many diesel trains are still are routed via the mainline, they can get to LIC station.

I can agree with that. LIC is more logical to keep open at that point, as it can be served by both mainline and Montauk branch runs.
All that current HP Ave passenger use will diminish exponentially. Whatever is left can be served via LIC.

There would be outrage though. Jamaica is still a major transfer point. Currently that is between Brooklyn trains, Penn trains, and HP Ave trains. With ESA, many people on Penn bound trains will want GC trains, and many people on GC trains will want Penn. In addition, people will still want Brooklyn for Lower Manhattan access. All that happens at Jamaica, and you can't take that away.

I wouldn't be surprised if the RR proposes some major track realignment to turn Sunnyside into a new diesel terminal. Part of that plan would involve allowing DMs to enter NYP from the Lower Montauk.

Remember: this is the LIRR. They've reinvented the wheel before, and they'll do it again.

It would be nice if DM trains could use the Lower Montauk. The mainline will be stressed more than ever before once GC becomes a destination. It has 4 tracks, so it can probably handle it, but it would be nice to get some of those diesels off the line. Not to mention, imagine the possibilities if they could make at least one local station a "real" station, such as Fresh Pond if the line led to Manhattan! It couldn't be "that" hard to do, the tracks are so close....so close, yet so far....

It's that time of the year for me to again propose the simplest of solutions.
Have some LIRR trains use the Lower Montauk and have the trains nap at a rebuilt Yard A via the Montauk Cutoff. Passengers can get off at a platform/s at the proposed Sunnyside Station and transfer to various subway services at Queens/Queensboro Plaza a la Flatbush Terminal.

As it is, getting through JAY/HALL eats up a lot of time, both traversing the interlockings at slow speed, eating up dwell at the platforms, and then proceeding in timetable order west (where a few trains ahead or behind time can cause a snowballing series of delays and congestion).

So all that I am really proposing to do is to more or less maintain the number of trains stopping at Jamaica, while the rest bypass. For example, the Huntington-New York routes will be on a 5 minute headway during the AM peak hour, i.e., 6 tph will be added. There is not need for an additional 6 tph to stop at Jamaica. Most trains that don't stop at Jamaica can stop at Woodside, and that allows for an easy same platform transfer between ESA and NYP trains.

I think that I see what you have in mind:

At BLISS, just west of Greenpoint Av on the Montauk Line, instead of taking the bridge over Dutch Kills to LIC, take the ramp* over a lot of interlocking F, which should drop the train off right at Sunnyside station, headed eastbound, at which point trains can either use the Sunnyside Yard leads to loop back westbound towards a yard, or head towards Jamaica or points east.

* I think that only one of the two ramps is still in operation.

That applies to besses and other vehicles subject to laws appertaining to motor vehicles. It does not apply to LOCOMOTIVES, nor does is apply to stationary applications such as electric generators.

REMEMBER, Even though locomotives are not moving, they ARE providing hotel power to their consists. This likely enough includes cleaning and car maintenance.

It makes GREAT SENSE to clean and maintain the C3s at LIC with one day time crew than to maintain them at the east end with several night time crews.

So YES. LION SAYS LIC will continue to live and service trains.

Most trains that don't stop at Jamaica can stop at Woodside, and that allows for an easy same platform transfer between ESA and NYP trains.

It sounds like a sound idea, but it may not work. Look at the interlockings. You want to arrange things so that one train will not have to pass in front of the other.

Manhattan bound trains share a pair of platforms serving tracks 1,2 and 3. So those will be the tracks that trains stop on. 4 and 5 can also be used for east bounds, but to access Woodside they would have to move to the "local" tracks. Maybe that is possible, maybe it will interfere with other trains.

I am not familiar with the interlocking at Jamaica and so cannot suggest what will and will not work.

If that could somehow be done, it would be great as it can double as a 34th Street crosstown. The problem would be, such a tunnel would have to be extremely deep in that part of Manhattan because of all of the existing tunnels already in place there PLUS the new one being built for NJT.

For that to work, what might have to happen there would be for the line to be open cut at Hunterspoint, then have it go via a new, rail-only bridge over the East River with the line continuing as an elevated line to 12th Avenue/34th Street. This could include stops on 34th Street at 1st-2nd or 2nd-3rd Avenues, Park-Madison Avenues (MetroCard transfer to the 6), Broadway-7th Avenue (MetroCard Transfers to the 1, 2, 3, B, D, F, N, R, V and W, 8th-9th Avenues (MetroCard transfers to the A, C and E) before a terminal at 11th-12th Avenues and 34th Street. I would also build such a line if possible with provisions to later build a branch (with access to/from both east and west) that could become a new 10th Avenue El with stops going uptown at 42nd (exits at 42nd, 44th and 45th), 57th Street (exits at 54th, 55th and 57th) and a terminal at 72nd and Amsterdam where it meets with Broadway (with transfers to the 1, 2 and 3) with further provisions to later go further up Amsterdam Avenue.

there is no reason why you cannot load the Cannonball in four minutes.

That's not how it works.

First of all, Cannonball has longer dwell time. Second, to make it a dual mode operation introduces another element of failure to LIRR's premier train. Third, there is not enough room to lay up such a long train at WSY, and changing ends at NYP eats up even more dwell time.

But the train is already shorter than it used to be before the new trains came, as the train is bilevel, so the train is shorter anyway than it once was.

Let's not forget this, the MTA gets what is wants & if it wants to keep the LIC yard up & running the way it currently is, then it will be so. Case in point, when they put in the 3'd track on the harlem line of Metro-North between Mt Vernon West & Crestwood, the NIMBY's bitched & moaned about how the extra trains the track would introduce would disturb the acquired ambiance of their back yard expierence, & no way we would permit it.

Well, guess what, the track is up & running & providing the service improvements it was designed for.

Not being a LIRR guy & my facts could be shakey, I think there's being constructed a 3'd track between Mineola & New Hyde Park. Once again the NIMBY's whined like a speeding R-9 to no avail at the initial idea proposal

So in the 23'd century when there is a Transporter.com message board, I'd bet that pesky LIC yard will still be there & most of the whiners will be relocated to more quieter "digs", Calvery Cemetary!!

Wow, you are obsessed.

Those things that are dazzling you are called "facts." Though I know you find them very confusing, accepting them may allow you to become a functional member of society some day.

What are you talking about? Talking to yourself and realizing how wrong you were back then? Look at how many people hammered you for being wrong. Learn from it, youngster . . .

(And I bumped this thread because streetcarman posted a duplicate, on the same subject as the OP of this thread)

I think most people in electric territory will simply get on a train headed directly to the terminal of their choice. I assume everyone but West Hempstead will see a mix of Penn Station and GCT bound trains.

Indeed....but I don't think most people really understand what "living next to a railroad" really means. I never would've expected miscellaneous fans to be blowing loudly in the middle of the night. Plus, if people see a yard as "the place to park trains", most people think that the engines are shut down, much like cars.

Now, if they were just complaining about trains passing through every once in a while (or several times an hour) than that's one thing, but one can play devil's advocate and see how they might not truly understand how noisy RRs are!

Is there a train station nearby (within a short walk)? Also, is this near where the 7 train crosses over all of those LIRR tracks and such?
