Is the right-of-way wide enough that they could build extra tracks to allow subway and freight operations to be on separate tracks? Rapid transit on Lower Montauk would be great for so many reasons.If money were no object and our politicians actually had some will, I'd propose running a new subway line from Jamaica along the Lower Montauk line, then run it into a new tunnel under the East River and 34th Street, terminating at 11th Avenue. It would connect to so many subway lines in Manhattan, the PATH train, Amtrak, NJT and Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building, the Javits Center, etc. I really think that's something well worth considering. Way better than closing it down completely after ESA opens. |
