But it seems that most people earn straight salaries. I could be wrong, but the only non union people who get paid by the hour are people like take-out food delivery employees, who proabably get paid off the books, and foot messengers (if they still have those), who usually work part time anyway. That's why there is always such a backlash when the media does reports on people earning overtime. Because most people don't earn overtime. |

Maybe NYCT will have a reduction in sick leave if they have people assigned to clean facilities, to supply soap and paper towels at all times. This is probably going to sound callous, but maybe as a union, you guys should just buy your own cleaning supplies? Admittedly, this is something the employer should provide, but to me it seems silly to allow one's self to get sick by not bringing in supplies on an individual or group basis. |

Daily overtime is usually contractual between unions and employers. The Federal law calls for overtime if you WORK over 40 hours in a week. Work time under federal rules does not include paid time off such as vacation, sick or holiday. So under Federal rules you can work 10 hours each on Monday through Thursday, call in sick on Friday and get paid 48 hours straight time. OTOH if you were to work on that Friday instead of calling in sick you would get 40 hours straight and 8 hours o/t... |

That's right. The report is refering to all overtime.Come to think of it, the report implies that all the extra money the employees are making causes the deficit. That is inaccurate. Speaking for NYCT, lots of overtime for bus operators, train dispatchers, and conductors, just to name a few titles, comes out of the capital budget for GO's. For example, any dispatcher working a job made necessary by a GO and a bus operator doing shuttle bustitution work, is getting paid out of the capital budget and not the operating budget. This means their pay is being reimbursed. But this report does not take that into account. Common sense and observations dictate that a lot of bus operators are making big bucks thanks to all these RTO GO's. There are only so many extra list operators available to work these jobs as well as the regular runs in each depot. |

But if you get paid by the hour, union or not, I think it's Federal Law the employee gets time-and-a-half after 8 hours work in a day.The federal law only applies to the 40 hour workweek. Comp time is also illegal for private sector non-salaried employees In the non-union private sector, the federal 8 hour OT rule only applies to certain manufacturing, construction work and allied trades work done on federal contracts. |

From D.O.L site:An employer who requires or permits an employee to work overtime is generally required to pay the employee premium pay for such overtime work. Employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) must receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a workweek of at least one and one-half times their regular rates of pay. The FLSA does not require overtime pay for work on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, or regular days of rest, unless overtime hours are worked on such days. The FLSA, with some exceptions, requires bonus payments to be included as part of an employee's regular rate of pay in computing overtime. Extra pay for working weekends or nights is a matter of agreement between the employer and the employee (or the employee's representative). The FLSA does not require extra pay for weekend or night work or double time pay. |

I'm still being sarcastic, but that's EXACTLY what all of these articles seem to be implying - that the MTA's employees don't deserve to get paid, as if every craft worker is in on the conspiracy to raise fare prices and aren't just average joe workers trying to earn a living.....with the MTA, as with pretty much EVERY type of job, there are some bad apples who cheat the system to earn extra time/pay. I certainly know how to beat the system and not get caught in my profession, and I've known other people who DID get caught, so that's nothing unique to the MTA, but it doesn't mean that the people who DID put in the extra time and effort don't deserve to receive the overtime pay that they earned. Do you put in 7 day weeks on MNRR for the fun of it? Would you still work those extra shifts if you'd be getting the same salary? Neither would I....And you're right, if you cut salaries, then they will strike and start looking for new jobs, and none of the trains will move at all.... |

Nope, sorry. I want to work for the NYCT to get a steady paycheck. Working around trains is a nice bonus, but I know where to draw the line between a hobby and a career. Right now I work with computers, which is another big passion of mine, and I have done a couple of freebies, but I'm not leaving my house and going on site without a contract in place guaranteeing that I will be compensated for my time and effort.Nobody seems to realize that the people running the subway, trains, busses, etc are actual humans who are trying to earn that paycheck too. Fares plus government subsidiaries are what pay their salaries. Bitch about fare hikes all you want, but if the workers aren't getting their $100,000 a year, then you better believe they ain't gonna keep working, and then you can keep your fare money and put it towards buying a car. |

That's not what you said, even after you were questioned about your initial response. So no, your "nope sorry" is in reference to your own words, not to mine.Furthermore, my point was that since you do want to work for NYCT, and since you were adamantly saying that NYCT employees should work for free, that you were therefore willing to work for free. |

It's like that family member who is always asking for money, then they go buy something expensive and unnecessary. |
