Cool beans! I particularly enjoyed ...

"And that's why, Brucker said, a few years ago, when the chairman of the Metro-North Railroad tried to go down to the secret station and was stopped by security, he said, sternly, "This is my railroad." To which the equally stern response was, "Not today." "

no and the FDR car is only a FDR car in Dan Bruckners imagination.

The secret armoured car is nothing more than a ex penn central, exx Pennsy bagage car.

it was not in GCT till about 1984 when it was added to wreck train by then wreck master Ed Whitney, the car is loaded with slings blocking and other gadgets used by Crane NYC 1 which now resides at Danbury railroad museum.

This bagage car and 2 of its identical sisters were sold to MNCR on its inception in 1983 one went to wreck train, one went to wire train and one was spare (in Harmon I believe)

the spare car was scrapped, the wire train one ended at Danbury railway museum and third is a figment of mr.bruckers imagination in GCT where it sits rotting away.

The blue and reporting mark had nothing to do with militairy but was added at North White plains shop in 1984/5 when car was pained and restocked and trucks serviced.

Very cool. I have been deep in the basement of Grand Central many stories down. Back int he early 90's, I took a Long Island NRHS tour of Grand Central, which included the far deep basement. There's also catwalks high in the windows you can walk through. There are actually corridors through them. Very cool place.

They always brag about how great their lost & found is, yet a couple years ago I accidentially left my neck badge, which had my work ID (with my name and photo) on one side and my monthly pass on the other, on my seat when I got off at Stamford. I immediately went upstairs and reported it at the ticket window, where I was told that my train was continuing on to South Norwalk and would skip Stamford on the return trip, but he would have them contact the crew to look for it.

It never showed up in Lost & Found. I always had a suspicion that monthly tickets are one thing they will never return.......

You'd be suprised at some of the valueable stuff thats turned in there. The strangest was a guy who lost a video camera with a tape of (so he says) his wife giving birth. It was turned in & I told the guy that he should tie the camera to some body part so he would'nt lose it again.
He thanked me profusely,in tears, & reminded him of how lucky he was.
A tape like that could have wound up on 8th ave.

I ran the place in the early 90's & could write a book about it.
My standard answer was that if the intention of the person that found your item is to turn it in, then you'll get it back. If not, then, well you know the rest. Some people keep what they find.

Thanks for the info and pics. The article stated that vents in this car were used as gun ports. I found that a bit suspect since the clerestory vents are located near the ceiling. How can someone fire a gun with their head on the ceiling ?

The vents in the article didn't look like gun ports. Also the blue paint didn't look like anything used by the N.Y.C. in 1932.

So much for an imagination !

It was offered to Danbury Railway Museum a few years back right after 9/11, homeland security wanted the car out because of security concerns.
The FRA allowed a one time waiver if brakes worked, even if they were out of date.
DRM sat on idea without ever responding, and car is still there.
It is of no use for MNCR operations, all material inside was for the double ended crane which resieds at Danbury railway Museum.

As a side note, any car used for car transport was equipped with end doors that could accomodate a car over coupler end, this car does not have this. the door on side is hardly big enough to have a smart two for two make the turn, no way a presidential Limo would have fit.

Isn't it also the case that the special entrance to the Waldorf was created while he was governor of New York and came down to the city frequently on the NY Central?

The CNET article suggests the entrance was created at the request of the White House. I don't think that's right, but I'm not sure.

True, but is was not supposed to be an NYC car. This one came from the PRR, but as you say that is not their color either. But it does come close to the colors of the B&O which *did* serve Washington, and *could* have been the source of this car.

In any event it the LION ran the secret service in those days, he would NOT want the president traipsing about in a BLUE car which would stand out like a sore thumb on almost any railroad that hauled it. Nope, that is not for the LION, the LION would have used a Pullman green car. Period.

Indeed while the LION likes all of the different colors of subway cars that he has on his layout, always buying the cheapest ones available, he would prefer that all of the cars look exactly alike, and for the same reason: the eye cannot follow all of them because they all look the same. When you have silver trains mixed in with red trains, with green trains, and with tuscan trains, the eye can follow one particular train. That would not do, except as I say, money trumps color every time. And besides, I am happy to have the different paint schemes represented.

about the colors. first the blue in the pic is pretty much Conrail medium blue. Second when Roosevelt was POTUS many trains were no longer Pullman Green. PRR was Tuscan, and by Roosevelt's second term B&O had numerous Blue and Gray cars. The NYC began to have two tone Gray as of 1938 with the coming of the lightweights.
B&O was indeed very involved in POTUS trains and the B&O RR Historical Society has run several articles in their Sentinel magazine about same.

Second when Roosevelt was POTUS many trains were no longer Pullman Green. PRR was Tuscan, and by Roosevelt's second term B&O had numerous Blue and Gray cars

Yes, the LION figured all of this out. But across the country nobody would take special notice of a Pullman Green car. B&O colors, PRR colors, NYC colors, all of these would stand out tlie a sore thumb on any western property. Not a good thing in wartime, you know.

NOPE< LION SAYS GREEN!
