PATH stations to receive $200M in upgrades to better commuters' train rides |
|
|
Posted by PATHman on Tue Jul 6 12:59:00 2010 Get ready for extreme makeover, mass transit edition.Commuters who take PATH trains from New Jersey to Manhattan are going to notice improvements over the next several years, including more benches, cleaner surroundings and better loudspeaker systems, not to mention a nearly complete overhaul of one of the rail system's decaying stations. The upgrades are part of a $200 million, 10-year project by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that is being funded partly by the extra $2 motorists have been paying at the city's bridges and tunnels since 2008. The bistate agency hopes the improvements make commuting more enjoyable for the approximately 70 million passengers who ride PATH each year as well as buff up the system's reputation for being drab, dirty and uncomfortable. "We're trying to make it more commuter friendly," PATH deputy executive director Bill Baroni told The Record newspaper. "Like all good transit systems, we're evolving constantly." One of the biggest projects will to be transform the Harrison station just outside Newark. The 97-year-old station is scheduled for more than $100 million in improvements, including replacing its aging platform and tiny waiting room with sleek, glass- and steel-covered pavilions. Officials said the improvements at the Harrison station are envisioned to coincide with the area's planned residential and commercial redevelopment as well as the increased traffic generated by the Red Bull Arena soccer stadium. Other stations will be spruced up with new seating, lighting and flooring, and loudspeaker systems that blare out frequently unintelligible announcements will be replaced. Platforms along the corridor between Newark and the World Trade Center will be expanded to accommodate longer trains that will be able to carry an additional 400 passengers per trip, the Port Authority said. http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/07/path_stations_to_receive_200m.html |

Here come 8 car trains. It'll be a challenge lengthening some stations to accomodate them. Like 9th and Christopher Sts. |

Increased train length would only be NWK-WTC... which already can handle 8 cars. The only stop that couldn't was Exchange Place eastbound (conductor would not open the first car), and it was renovated after 9/11 to be able to accommodate 9 or 10 car trains. Now, the number of 400 people makes me think that they are doing more than 8 cars (can you picture 400 people in one path car?). And for that, only Newark and Exchange Place are ready. Possibly Journal Square can handle 9. |

It would still be a challenge to lengthen Grove St. And I think the 33rd St stations could all use 8 car trains as well. |

It's for 10 car trains on the NWK-WTC line. The other lines might stay the same with 7 cars because of the fact some stations would have to undergo a serious renovation and expanding project (Hoboken and 33rd Street as terminals most definitely because of how they are set up). IMHO, neither of the Hoboken lines need extra car(s). During the rush hour you may not find a seat, but there is a considerable amount of room to stand for a 10-15 ride tops. The JSQ-33rd St line could definitely use longer trains during the rush, but the solution may not come easy. Maybe add more trains to the schedule if possible but at 4-5 minutes between trains during the rush already, that might add congestion from Grove Street to Journal Square with the NWK-WTC line running at about the same. |

It would still be a challenge to lengthen Grove St.It won't be too much of a challenge though. The new entrance at Grove Street was a set up for expanding the platform. It is a matter opening the walls along the walkway and make it ready for service. PATH has been wanting to renovate Grove Street for quite a while now. With this project of expanding the platforms for more cars, it can finally be done. But I think because of WTC construction and single tracking between EX PL and WTC during the weekends, they don't want to disrupt the service as it is already (which sucks already cause trains get held up if another doesn't clear on time). |

Track 2 at Newark (if you include the fenced off section) can hold an 18 car train. There's a reason Newark Penn & Secaucus have such long platforms, btw. Wait for it... It's so that when Portal drawbridge malfunctions, all of the stranded trains will be able to platform at these two stations, providing transfers for the riders. |

Now if NJT were really clever, they'd be able to transfer people onto trains on the lower level, and then send those trains to Newark Division points via the West End Wye and the Waterfront Connection, in the case of a PORTAL malfunction. But I doubt they're really clever, given their recent capital projects . . . |

And the only things being said was the WMATA was not all that perfect. Even Sandbox John made this statement: "I happen to agree with Oren. Your praise and admiration for WMATA is in my opinion based on your inability and or lack of desire to see the big picture. You make yourself look like fool with your juvenile, boiler plate, everything is wonderful at WMATA posts.John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore." Hardly a person with a vendetta against anyone. And that comment is what I agreed with, nothing more. That's where it snowballed basically. |

Fine, but if I state my opinions in agreement about how I feel SOME express buses are a waste, you comment directly to ppl like R30A or trainsarefun first.I had no issues with you, but why you felt you had to defend the WMATA at all costs even though Sand Box John and Oren both stated otherwise I don't understand. And then I agreed with them and you think this has anything to do with what happened in the past. Any reasonable person would see the fault in even things they like, but your problem was that the WMATA 'could do no wrong'. And everything the MTA does you bash just to justify your disdain for it. It's a friggin opinion. I understand you like the WMATA, but you don't have to be an apologist about it. If you were willing to accept they made mistakes [god knows the NYCT subways has problems of their own], then that would've been fine and no problems would've came up from it. Flame wars would've happened eventually even if I wasn't there. Also after everything regarding the photos stuff, you comment on only the express buses like nothing else was posted. Would it kill you to say 'nice pics and i like the express bus pics'? |
