Fulton St El at Truxton St |
|
|
Posted by Mellow One on Wed Apr 21 16:10:27 2010 I was researching my family history and discovered that my grandfather lived at 70 Truxton St, Brooklyn, NY prior to WWI.I also discovered that his brother lived a block away at 2216 Fulton St at that time. ![]() this image of Truxton St and Fulton St shows that the Truxton St area was was already cleared by 1940. Does anyone have a older image of the area? |

That is Eastern Pkwy crosssing Truxton in the foreground. The Broadway El at East NY is in the background and the Fulton El coming out of the center to the right. |

The area just to the left of the Fulton St el is Truxton Park ands its existence where it is as a city park facilitated construction of the IND subway at that point. Routing the IND subway from immediately under Fulton St to under the park made it possible for the el's replacement subway to have a transfer to the rest of the BMT Eastern Div at Bway Jct/E Pky which the el did not have. |

After the Dual contacts, when the Fulton el was 3rd tracked E /O Nostrand, there was no station between Rockaway Ave and Atlantic, so that Fulton St passengers could only transfer to the 14 St line at Atlantic. Transfer to,the Jamaica Line was only by going to riding to Atl n backriding to Bway Jct. |

However, it is interesting to compare the old and the new.My Grandfather and family moved to the Bronx from Truxton St about 1914. My Grandfater's brother moved back to Brooklyn Heights, from where Great Grandfather settled in the 1880's. Both my Grandfather and his brother married Brooklyn Girls. My Grandmother preferred the open spaces of the Bronx. My father resided in the Bronx for most of his life after then, from whence I was derived.

Fulton St passengers could only transfer to the 14 St line at Atlantic. They could also transfer to the Bway-Canarsie (14) line, which ran most of the time. If people were coming from Park Row or Sands St, they would take the Lex, which had an easy transfer to the Jamaica (15) line. The problem was for people who were going between intermediate stations and headed to/from Jamaica. Two transfers would be required. |

The old alignment allowed trains to transfer but not passengers (so you had to ride the appropriate through-train). IINM, until the opening of the Canarsie line, there was a service from the Broadway El to the eastern Fulton line, but was replaced with a 14th Street-Eastern Line. I don't know when they stopped running Fulton-Fulton (note Broadway El uses Fulton east of BJ) service if they ever did. |

AFAIK, once the 14 St Subway opened all the way to Manhattan, the Bway Bkln lcls terminated at E/Pky except for selected intervals in the rush hour since there was now a transfer available at Bway Jct for Canarsie trains. Either way, whether a passenger changed for a Bway Bkln lcl or a 14 St lcl both services went to Canarsie in one direction and Bway Jct/E Pky in the other. |

Prior to the dual contracts, Fulton did have a stop at what was at that time called "Manhattan Junction." Why a station wasn't constructed at Van Sinderen and Fulton I don't know. It looks like it would have been possible. |

The Bway Bkln lcl operated only during rush hours and even then there were only 3 intervals in the AM and PM rush that operated through to/from Canarsie. I worked there as both a C/R and Tw/M so I know with a relatively high degree of certainty. |

That occurred in 1956, after BMT Fulton line service was discontinued. 14th St-Fulton St trains were re-routed to Rockaway Pkwy. This was more than Canarsie could handle so some Bway locals were re-routed to Crescent St. |

That's correct until circa 1960 when AM Bway Bkln lcls originated at Jamaica and operated a skip stop service with the Jamaica expresses. Pm lcls continued to operate to Crescent St until 1967 when a PM skip stop to Jamaica was instituted. By the time I qualified as a road M/M in 1969, the PM skip stop service had been discontinued and both KKs and QJs mad all stops Jamaica bound. |
