Just a couple of shots at Valley Cottage, NY, at the Kings Highway Grade Crossing (Rockland County Route 13), north of CP 26 on the River Subdivision......

CSX Q409-13, Selkirk Yard, Albany NY to Rice Yard, Waycross GA (NOTE: The second set of numerals, in this case, the number 13 in Q409-13, means this is CSX scheduled Q-409 on the 13th in the date, in this case this was 09/13/2009)......

Thundering by, approaching CP 26 up ahead, the start of a four mile long siding, starting at CP 26 here in Valley Cottage, and ending and back to single track at CP 22 in Blauvelt......

Once an household name in the skies for decades, now a budding name on the rails in the Northeast!! PAN AM!!

I hate missing tracks. Used to be four, in the New Jersey half, and there used to be varnish going to Albany . . .

Great photos! Pan Am...I did a search on Google and it seems to have an interesting historic. Wikipedia gives an idea of the history behind the name Pan Am

Looks like a great spot, Paul. For some reason I don't see the PanAm stuff. Must be this TWA filter I have :D

Very good, Paul. An inspiration to get my arse away from this computer and head over that way. It's a 2-hour drive from here, which sort of
deters me. And I just read in the paper this morning that gas will be
over $3.00 very soon.

Many thanks, there!! :-)

I think it is funny how it went from basically a household name for travel at 36,000 feet to now being a "grounded" namesake!!

Well guess what??......

At this location used to be the Valley Cottage train station (NYC), and some of the canopy supports are still visible in the ground just out of view to the right when looking to the north towards the crossing. Now, a mini-mall parking lot occupies the space where I was (out of view behind my position), and this spot is actually a very poplar railfan spot in the area here. And CP 26 gives good heads up of southbound action with the north-facing (southward) signal well visible, and you can hear northbounds calling their signals down at CP 22.

Also......

In NJ, between CP 7 and CP 10, the line has been restored to 3 tracks, with 2 tracks already in place plus a third as a controlled siding. Not unusual to see two trains holding between CP 7 and CP 10, three mile long stretches, in Bogota, Teaneck and Bergenfield, when northward the 3-track slims to 1 track at CP 10, and a full single track only between CP 10 and CP 22.

Very awesome spot!!!

Here is the run down.....

Early mornings and early afternoons brings good spates of trains, mornings are mostly intermodal and 2 autoracks, lulls late morning and late afternoon, with 2 autoracks in the early morning (Q268, Louisville, KY to Doremus Avenue, Newark, NJ, and Q271, Doremus Avenue to Selkirk), about 6 - 8 hotshot intermodals, Q-118 being one of the hottest (Chicago to Little Ferry & Kearny), and if it has UPS, it is hot!!, and the usual manifests, Q409/10 (Selkirk to Rice Yard, Waycross GA and back), Q439/438 (Selkirk to Hamlet, NC and back), Q433/434 (Selkirk to Oak Island & back), Q-417/418 (Selkirk to Pavonia Yard, Camden NJ back) and Q-703/702 (Q703, Oak Point/Harlem River W.T. to Collier, VA and Acca Yard, Richmond, VA, Q-702 Acca Yard to Selkirk, with Q-701 forwarding empty trash containers from Selkirk to Oak Point/Harlem River W.T.), and of course be on the look out for the K-series ethanol trains between the Chicago area (Blue Island or Belt Railway Of Chicago Clearing Yard to either Oak Island or Linden on the Chemical Coast Secondary), occasional military trains, the Circus Trains (apparently Ringling Brothers is not the only circus that uses lengthy trains!!) and sometimes, usually on Sunday late afternoons or early evenings, pretty lengthy light engine moves between North Jersey and Selkirk, sometimes up to over a dozen units, and you can see JUST ABOUT ANYTHING, ANY ROAD NAME in that!!! Late evenings bring more intermodals, mainly stack trains and some more hotshots into the late and overnight hours. Manifests seem to be mostly daytimers here on the River Sub, though lately several northbound counterparts (Q418/438 and lately Q410) have been scheduled after dark, and Q-438 is the train of choice hauling up the M-8s from Bayview Yard, Baltimore MD.

(OK, I caught my breath!! :-D)

Trust me, the River Line rarely lets you down!! :-)

Thanks for the good words, Lee!! But believe me, once things get crackin' on the River Line, they do not let down easily, and lately with the snowstorms kicking the crap out of the region, not unheard of to get trains backed up one behind the other all the way north towards Selkirk. Most of the River Line actions can be well seen from several Hudson Line stations: Peekskill, Garrison, Beacon, though at Beacon it is better to go to the waterfront, and watch the CSX freights wind thru the "High Line" in Newburgh, also New Hamburgh and Poughkeepsie offere good views, and of course in Poughkeepsie, the NH Maybrook Line trestle over the Hudson is a damn good vantage point for action on both sides, as Mr. Fred G. so wonderfully illustrated some time back. And hey, if you choose the Hudson Line for viewing, gotta give MNR and Amtrak some shoot time too!! They put on a good show as well, and if you are lucky, depending on if you do it during the week, you might catch a freight or two DAYTIME on the MNR Hudson Line!!!
