New London to get second daily commuter train

Published: Thursday, February 04, 2010

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Amtrak will begin operating a second daily Stamford-to-New London, Conn., round trip on Feb. 16, Connecticut's The Day newspaper has reported. Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced the service expansion yesterday, part of the state's Shore Line East commuter service, which Amtrak operates under contract.

The new train will leave New London at 5:53 a.m., arrive at New Haven at 7:03, and Stamford at 7:54. On its return trip, it'll depart Stamford at 4:46 p.m., arrive at New Haven at 5:42, and New London at 6:52.

Rell said service would expand by four additional round trips later this year. But agitators for additional service said the announcement falls short of what's needed.

"Call me back when they get train service to New London," said Todd O'Donnell, a member of the One More Stop coalition. "This is what we worked for? One more train?"

LOL @ "agitators". I dunno, I'd like to see the ridership. Granted, hitting NLC at 6:52 pm is a little better than 7:40 pm but that 7:40 train was nearly empty anytime I've seen it. I'd like to see how the ridership is on the Amtrak trains that honor SLE multitrip tickets, too.

Those two trains operated before service was reduced. New London
has never been a very large market. Seldom did more that a handful
of people ride those trains. And the ones who have been riding Acela
for monthly commuter fares will probably be S.O.L. after this week.

Until new stations are built between Old Saybrook and New London,
it just doesn't make sense to me why those trains should run an extra
36 miles each (they have to deadhead to and from). There should
be stations at Sound View (Old Lyme), East Lyme/Niantic, and Waterford.

But the man who owns New London Union Station has been pushing for this
probably has been playing hardball with Amtrak about some financial
dealings, I would guess. I know when he phoned me, he told me he
had ways to exert pressure.

That's true, but there are only so many options. Here, they are:

1. Raise fares - this hurts farepayers.

2. Increase subsidies - this hurts taxpayers, and moreover, it's not a realistic option at the present time.

3. Cut service - this hurts farepayers and employees.

4. Lower wages/layoff employees - this hurts employees.

TMP naturally opposes (4). Option (2) is off the table. And farepayers like Mr. AEM-7AC #901 oppose (1). MTA ordered MNCR to reduce their budget, so what else is left to do?

Personally, I think that the MNCR cuts aren't much to complain about. NYCT riders will get hit a lot harder by the revision of the loading guidelines, e.g., midday 7 trains are operating SRO at 12 tph, so it's not going to be pretty with less trains.

If you were in my position, would you wanna do that?????

Given that your employer is cutting services due to declining tax revenues from its dedicated and state & local funded sources, the choice is either for the employees (management, back office, and front line) to take a wage/salary and benefit cut of some type, watch fares go up while service frequency decreases, or increase current tax rates or even create new tax revenue streams.

Or do you have a better solution? :-)

Of course he's not the only one bitching about them. But he's certainly among those who are both bitching about the service cuts and in a direct position to do something about the economics that require them. It's mildly hypocritical to demand improved service while being a drag on the system's bottom line.

NYCT already got their free labor out of me.

I think that's the only choice given the current situation, and I suspect that this may be something that affects all state and municipal employees (at all levels), especially in light of increasing pension and health insurance costs, and in the particular case of NYCTA, high debt servicing costs. Otherwise, I given the alternatives, a pay cut is certainly better than layoffs, and a service that's so unattractive, that even the employees eschew its use isn't ideal either.

BTW, I know people who work at NYCTA, and my dad was a decade long civil servant so I aim to avoid the anti-government employee rhetoric.

I joke about it and the 8 riders and all but there should be end to end rail service here other than Amtrak and ridership could increase with better train availability. There were only a handful of passengers riding when they began weekend service and that number went up, so it's worth a shot to see if these "agitators" have the passengers they claim. If it doesn't work they can always cut it.

Waterford is most necessary because of the parking situation in

There's a parking garage near NL Union Station that's never full.

It takes 15 minutes to drive from New London to Old Saybrook anyway, and it takes same if not less from Waterford. That's not unreasonable drive time to a suburban train station. When you look at siting possibilities for a station in Waterford you're almost in New London anyway. Millstone, Harkness, you're getting toward Miner Lane anyway, whoops, we're in New London.

your pal,
Fred
