Do workers ever clean up or hose down subway station walls?

I ask this because, at the 96th/Broadway station, the ongoing renovation has been moving at a snail's pace on the platforms. The new white tiles (why can't they just put up pre-made "blocks" of wall like in those late '90's IND renovations?), which have been placed directly over the old '50's-'60's extension tiles, have been up for well over a year now, but they've yet to add the finishing touches to it. Most notably, the tiles are already dirty as hell as if they've been up for 5-10 years, and they haven't even finished on the platform!

I'm just wondering if workers bother to clean that up, when the renovation's done or something. Reminds me of recent renovations (IND Columbus Circle, PABT stations) where the new tiling started failing quick. I'm anxious to see what the IRT Columbus Circle renovation's going to look like when its done. That one's taken ages too, but it looks REALLY nice so far.

1. Do the new white tiles look nicer than the blocks?

2. Since 96 St is a construction zone, maybe they aren't bothering to clean the walls since they will get really dirty after the following weekend's work? That said, those walls definitely could use a washing.

3. I'm sure the workers will "bother to clean that up, when the renovation's done or something." Just look at the new South Ferry. I'm sure those tiles were filthy from all the construction that happened after they were installed, but on opening day they were pretty clean.

Do workers ever clean up or hose down subway station walls?

Maybe?

To be specific, I like the near-"seamless" look of the blocks of tiles. Putting up tiles one by one seems so laborious.

That's one creepy-looking train.

They do not use Trains to wash stations any more. Just like they don't use a train to collect the money. Both are rubber tired trucks, the wash trucks are just high powered water. CTA's assigned run hoses down to the plats and spray high pressure water on the walls and plats. They use a detergent (don't know what) as well.

The question wasn't whether they used trains to wash the station walls, it was whether they washed the station walls at all. I used the photo of the station wash train, with the RETIRED text specifically in bold, to show that at one time they did wash the stations. I said "maybe" because I didn't know if that train had been replaced, or if some other method was put in place to wash the stations.

So once again, let's review:

1. I put "Retired" in bold specifically so you would know that I was aware that it was retired, and hopefully prevent uninformed little jabs like yours.

2. The OP's question that I was shedding light on was whether they wash the station walls at all, not whether they use trains to do it.

The MTA also does what the CTA does, except only during late nights the MTA does it and I don't think that the MTA uses anything but pure water from the hoses.

Well, I'm not so sure. Maybe it was before your time but I remember when the "new" Bowling Green station was built. (Why they used orange tiles and not green ones was always a mystery to me.) I assumed that the construction dust that had settled behind the lighting enclosures where the station name appeared would be cleaned before opening day. I was wrong. they remained brown and dingy (instead of white) for about five years before they were finally cleaned. Over time, then they got dirty from normal use and were never cleaned again. Finally they were just removed leaving the bare florescent bulbs and the station names on the enclosures were just replaced with signs.

Why would they use Green? The station's entire renovation predates the 1979 color scheme.

Take a look at Jay Street. They retiled earlier in the year and they got dirty as heck as the months wore on. In the past month or so, the cleaned the walls with weekend GO's and they looks sparkling white now. So yes, they will get to it in a later phase of the renovation.

I wasn't thinking of route colors. It just seemed obvious to me that with "Green" in the station name, that would have been the obvious color to choose.

They most certainly do, I've seen it myself many times. A "CTA" gets down on the trackbed and soaps up the walls with long handled brush, a section a a time. Another "CTA" then washes the soap off with either a power washer or a conventional hose. It's done in the early morning hours about once a month. No, they do not divert trains or change tracks. Their is a flagman with a hand held air horn, or whistle, positioned at the station entry point and warning lanterns are placed further up the in the tunnel.

Station track tile walls are cleaned by a group of cleaners called Track Tile Cleaners. They have a flagger and use Long handled scrub brushes to apply detergent and scrub the walls. They stand on the track and use mats to cover the third rail.

Mobile wash does do tile walls of side platform stations. Both are usually done during the overnight hours and Track Tile Cleaning is done only if there is no G.O. for that station or line
