Any word on the arrival of the first M8s?

This is funny. When I was railfanning in Mamaroneck on August 1, that New Jersey Transit test train pulled up and a man asked me, "Are these the new cars?" To which I said, "No, those are New Jersey cars."

"I thought the the new cars would be here by now."

"Think December," I responded.

Any news?

Hopefully never-they're crappy looking.

That's a dumb reason!

A much better reason for hoping "never" is that they don't have railfan windows like the cars being replaced.

But in the end, I recognize that the NH line is a much worse situation (in terms of current poor performance) than that which existed on the IND/BMT with the R-32 thru R-42 cars before the R-160 cars came.

I agree that they look horrible, but have to admit that I do prefer the M7's over the M1/3's as the a/c is great, heat is great, seats are ok, best of all the car w/ the bathroom does not always smell like the bathroom. If the M8's are like that then I probably will like them. I need to ride up and tour the car myself one of these days.

Might be able to drop the floor in the Bronx (I'm not sure), but to do so on Park Av would require so much utility relocation that the existing box basically the box.

Priority in terms of AC power for MNCR should probably be replacing existing catenary to modern standards; the pull-downs seem far more frequent than is the case elsewhere.

"No way Catenary fits in Park avenue tunnel or the Bronx trough for that matter"

I have to agree on this!! Especially on Tracks 4 and 3 (outer tracks). Tracks 1 and 2 have higher clearance but up to a point, after which the ceiling levels drops down, and catenary definitely can not be placed in such. And the Melrose tunnel is definitely too low for such.

That gives me an interesting idea. Could the local stations (59th, 72nd, 96th, 110th Sts) be used to alleviate overcrowding on the Lex Ave Line? Obviously they would need to be rebuilt for modern use. Also, there is the issue of how fares would be paid (Metrocard?).

Based on the description and drawings in the Joseph Brennan web page it seem that wire could in fact be put in those tunnels. Razing the tunnel is out of the question but lowering the floor by at least 2' looks feasible to me.

How did you compute the lower bound of 2 ft?

The floor was lowered to max nearly 15 years ago when Azobe ties were installed, the rail at one point is actually laying on top of the 63th steet tunnel with no ballast under the ties just around it.
There is no way in hell the track bed can be lowered without disturbing the tunnel wal foundation, of wich currently over 1.5 foot is exposed.

How much additional vertical clearance was gained in that lowering project? Direct fixation track fasteners on the 63 rd Street tunnel roof would increase the vertical clearance by at least the depth of the ties.

As I recall the wall foundations were underpinned in the in the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore to gain additional vertical clearance.

No way Catenary fits in Park avenue tunnel or the Bronx trough for that matter.

Then lets bring back the overhead third rail.
