SF and probably Seattle would be hard to do in a weekend and SF isn't exactly inexpensive. It's probably only a little cheaper and quicker than his canceled Germany trip. |

If [possible, take the Amtrak Cardinal one way, it's a great train ride( slow but great). It doesn't run every day so you would need to check. |

New York is the biggest railroad haven in the country. It's the core of Amtrak, it has the biggest subway system in the country and 3 of the largest commuter railroads. It would take a month for a tourist to see it all. If you're not from NYC, NYC would be the #1 destination for a railfan tourist. |

Given your time constraints, either Boston or Montreal.Boston is one of those places that seems to fill the "day trip" role for me since it's only 4 hrs away on Regional. Plus, I'd hold off for there until the fall since the Green Line looks better with foliage. So, Montreal seems to be a reasonable idea, especially since I have family up there (and in neighbouring Ottawa), and it has a subway system that I haven't touched yet. |

Riders equals trains when it comes to varnish, after all; the fewer riders, the fewer trains to carry 'em.Freights are boring even on the NEC (a place you'd think would have fast freight, but they move slower on that line than freight trains out west, ironically). |

Chicago -> Sizable subway system, Metra Electric, and South Shore. The real downside is the summer heat, and I'm wondering if I'll have enough time to railfan and explore the city.Miami -> Hurricane? Too many pretty people? San Francisco -> That was so last summer. :-) Boston -> It falls into the day trip zone... Seattle -> Well, admittedly the light rail opens up this month, but I'd prefer to do that in conjunction with Portland and Vancouver. Plus, it kinda the time zone differences eat away time. Toronto -> Great for streetcars, but fugly subway cars unless you like the modern 75ft Brightliner look. Denver (per R 42 4787) -> Sizable light rail system even with frigging high floors. How are the summers up there, and despite being less dense than say Seattle or Toronto, does it have urban areas worth exploring? |
