I never heard the brakes release at all. And if that happened you would have smoke issuing. Therefore, it is obvious the car, or the car in front of it, was taking excessive power. They didn't want to abandon the interval. And they sent the train to the yard after the trip. Everything was done textbook.

That pair needs to be shopped ASAP!! Next time, report that to the conductor!! Here at MNR, I lost count how many times I called in very rough cars (all NH equipment) and 3 blown traction motors which resulted in ride qualities and noises that had alarmed passengers making reports to me or the crew, and one time the noise and roughness from a blown traction motor we reported resulted in the train being taken out of service. The other times, we were speed restricted, 40 MPH....though it still didn't help. Don't be afraid to report it.

Looks like verrrrrrrrrrrrry tight brakes, and/or possible a trainline issue where the brake release and acceleration "command" from the head end reaches this pair later than it is supposed to, and results in delayed action. Definitely a candidate for shopping. Surprised this didn't end in, at some point this day, a pull-apart (undesired uncoupling).

More than a few times on NH equipment, I have seen delayed actions in equipment, primarily how an entire train will close down with the exception of say one pair, which sometimes waits like 8 - 10 seconds before it completely closes

It looked more like a trainline issue, where the brakes released in this pair or in the single car, a couple seconds delayed compared to the rest of the train, with the resulting jolt coming from the other cars already taking power, and the train "kicking" in at the last second as the pairs' brakes finally released, delayed.

It was excess power, not a braking problem although on GE cars, one problem can cause another. I'd be curious to see if the dynamic was working first. ON GE SCM equipped cars, if the dymanic brake is improperly disabled (5 breaker turned off only) or not working, the controller does not run down to proper position before starting from a station. If the T/O wraps the controllers around, the controller in the affected car runs into series or starts at the higher cam position.

I've experienced something like this on the 7 train when they still ran redbirds. Heading out of Flushing, the car would start moving and then massively jolt forward. Happened at every single stop and it elicited similar responses from the passengers as your video shows. At least it didn't happen during the rush!

I once had an Oldsmobile that had delayed brakes like that. Very annoying. Sometimes at intersections, after my signal turned green, I would take my foot off the brake and accelerate away, only to hear the brakes actually disengage about 10 seconds later. I was actually driving with my brakes still engaged! :(

Bill if it was dragging brakes, they could have been glazed over enough to hear the squealing you would hear from cars with dead motor lights. I never heard rubbing brakes in the video, and the platform clearly shows the car lurching forward into the draft gear of the other car. I stand by my belief it is excess power as described in my prior post

Doesn't this car sound like it has problems? Hey I don't pretend I understand mechanics, but that doesn't sound 'normal'. If this were an automobile, I would bring it to a mechanic to inspect asap.
I mean they may as well just 'retire' this pair or take out this whole set [keep some around as spares] when another R160 arrives.

That's only if this is the most problematic old dog, and depending on what the R160 delivery and testing schedule is like. Maybe other than the excess power issue, this is one of the better off dogs, and it can hang out longer after a minor repair is made. Or maybe not. But I would think that would be something for the shop to evaluate.

Because they are needed for everyday service till there are enough R160's on the property. All they are doing is keeping them running. Maybe Jamaica barn will retire that pair if they diagnose that they should be put out of their misery sooner rather than later. I'll keep my eyes open. Those R42's had it easy for a while at ENY, then came to Jamaica to get pounded with E line high mileage due to lots of service on the line. They can joint the other basket cases in storage at Pitkin Yard. 4712/13 were transfered to Jamaica well after higher numbered cars were transfered and they didn't last long at all. Same thing when 4590/91 were transfered from Pitkin service to Jamaica and they seem to be pending retirement, they are buried on 66 or 68 track. Why do you think they're not painting the roofs and replacing the glass?

I am not in denial that the car doesn't have problems. Listen pal: I work for the system, I know problems that some cars have that you don't know about that you can't see and I'm not telling! All I'm saying is it may or may not be necessary to scrap the car according to if it is or not a major issue. Your attitude is give it a death sentence automatically.

Ok, so I was premature to give it a quick send off. But if this was the same car I saw back in December, then it's been at least 2 months that they've let this car run 'as is'. And I would like to think it is nothing serious, but it probably does need further inspection. Hopefully maybe it is just a 'minor' problem and it can fixed.

I never knew that a train could go BIE and take power before it was recharged. The things I learn on this board on a daily basis is mind boggling. You learn something new everyday around here.

Indeed, grasshopper. :)

Don't make the mistake of thinking that your decades of experience operating actual trains in service actually trumps hearsay posted here.

The trains that don't need to be recharged after BIE are the ones with rainbow-scheme painted threshold plates, which tells you that they are going to be transferred to Unionport.

So in the immortal words of GI Joe cartoons, 'Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!'

Yes, the cyber-subway world if full of truely amazing feats and events that we, in the real world would never believe. And yet - an unlimited number of such events and even more witnesses. The mind boggles.

Trust me that, Would cause a major retierment of the r42 fllet, If it was an R32 they would have taken all of them out of service.
