Metro parking lots are filling up

I am posting the full text of the article as its content is likely to change throught out the day:

January 20, 2009 - 7:54am
WASHINGTON - Metro parking lots are filling quickly as people park and head to the inauguration.

Here are the lots that are full:
  • Branch Avenue
  • New Carrollton
  • Greenbelt
  • Largo Town Center
  • Fort Totten
  • Rhode Island Avenue
  • East Falls Church
As of 7 a.m., Metro ridership was 207,335.

At 7 a.m., WTOP's Adam Tuss reports there are still plenty of parking spaces at the end of the Orange Line at the Vienna station.

At 7 a.m., Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel tells WTOP that priority bus corridors are starting to fill up. People are encouraged to use the buses over the subway trains.

At 7:17 a.m., WTOP's Kate Ryan reports that the Shady Grove parking lot on the Red Line is still taking cars, but Lot 1's surface lot is full.

At 6:36 a.m., Metro reports that the Blue and Orange line trains are bypassing Federal Center SW due to crowded conditions until further notice.

Metro is urging people not to hold open the doors of Metro railcars. Doing so damages the cars. Four railcars had to be taken out of service, but have since been put back in.

Here are the Metro ridership numbers by the hour:
  • 6 a.m. -- 104,751
  • 7 a.m. -- 207,335
VRE Parking Lots

Virginia Railway Express says you can park at the Backlick or Lorton lots and take a bus from there.

Crowds

"The crowds are enormous," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier tells WTOP.

Lanier says people are listening and not driving into the District. She says there is little vehicular traffic in the city. There are large crowds around the checkpoints.

Security forces are still doing their sweeps. Lanier says the parade route cannot open until those security checks are finished.

Karyn LeBlanc, spokeswoman for the D.C. Department of Transportation, says there are lots of excited pedestrians on the streets. She's urging drivers to watch out for pedestrians.

Up to 318,000 as of 8:35 AM. A train is disabled at Crystal City right now.

Adam Tuss reports that the parking attendants at Vienna let many cars in for free but doesn't know why that happened.

From the latest round of reports on WTOP:

Add Shady Grove, Glenmont, and Huntington to the stations with full parking lots

It is difficult if not impossible for people to board inbound trains at King Street, Braddock Road, and National Airport.

Some people are reporting difficulty in using the one day passes. My guess is it is probably related to the fact rush hour fares are being charged, so the machines are rejecting the passes because they weren't set properly.

I heard from ABC News that a 68 year old woman was struck by a train. Nothing else known except there will be some disruptions in Metro service. I don't know where it happened at this time.

She was not struck. She fell from the Glenmont platform at Gallery Place at around 9:25 a.m. She was removed from the track bed and take to hospital. Service was resumed shortly there after.

From Dr. Gridlock blow by blow blog blog:

"Metro says a preliminary investigation shows that the woman fell on the tracks around 9:25 a.m. but was not hit by an approaching train headed toward Glenmont. She has been taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."

For immediate release: January 20, 2009

866,681 riders used Metrorail on Monday, January 19

Hundreds of thousands of people in town for the Inauguration of Barack Obama helped Metro set a new record for the transit agency’s highest ridership on Monday, January 19. I got a press release from Metro 10 minutes ago saying that station has reopened. It was unexpectedly closed following the Inauguration ceremonies due to crowding. Additionally, Judiciary Square has been closed for security reasons since the Commander in Chief Inaugural Ball is taking place at the National Building Museum, just across the street from the station entrace. Here is that release:

Federal Triangle Metrorail station reopens
For immediate release: January 20, 2009

Federal Triangle reopens, Judiciary Square station to close at 4 p.m.
The Federal Triangle Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange Line reopened around 4 p.m. while Judiciary Square on the Red Line is closed for the rest of the night.

Federal Triangle station closed at 11:30 a.m. at the request of local police due to crowding on the National Mall. Judiciary Square is closed for inaugural ball-related security reasons.

Metro also is sending extra buses to Federal Triangle Metrorail station to transport patrons using wheel chairs.

There have been extremely crowded conditions throughout the rail system and especially at stations near the National Mall. People planning to take Metro are urged to not immediately enter stations after the inaugural parade. Metro also advises if crowds are extremely large at rail station entrances, walk to a nearby rail station or board a Metrobus. Police also may temporarily stop the flow of people into a station until crowds on platforms allow for safe passageway.

From wmata.com:

Houston officer rescues woman who fell onto Metrorail tracks
For immediate release: January 20, 2009

Metro thanks Houston officer
An officer from the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (Houston Metro) helped rescue a woman who had fallen onto the tracks at the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail station earlier today (January 20).

While patrolling the Red Line platform at the station around 9:15 a.m., Officer Eliot Swainson, a 15-year veteran of the Houston Metro Police Department, heard people yelling that a person was on the tracks. “I turned around and saw a lady standing in the track area,” Swainson said.

He rushed to the woman and with the assistance of a Metro rider, they reached down to try to pull her up from the tracks, but were unable to as a Red Line train heading toward Glenmont was pulling into the station. “The train was coming in closer,” Swainson said. At that point, “I pushed her down and got her tucked down under the platform.” He directed the woman to remain in the crawl space beneath the granite platform edge for safety.

“Due to Officer Swainson’s quick response, the woman was not seriously injured,” said Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn. “He did exactly what was expected, and we are enormously grateful for his actions.”

The 68-year-old Nashville woman was not hit by the approaching train. An emergency response crew pulled her out from under the platform and took her to an area hospital with injuries that were not believed to be serious.

Officers from 18 transit properties across the country joined the Metro Transit Police today to help provide security for the Metro riders on Inauguration Day. After being deputized to police in Washington area on Monday, Jan. 19, the officers received a safety briefing from the Metro Transit Police about what to expect and what to do in emergency situations.

During the morning incident, Red Line riders faced major delays. Normal service resumed around 10:15 a.m.

Now you know why the platforms edges are cantilevered the way they are.

I would like give out two attaboys:
  • First to the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas that was on special assignment with the Metro Transit Police Department for quick thinking.
  • And second to the folks in the Metro Transit Police Department for briefing the special assignment officers on the various safety features built into the stations and how to use them.
One can safely assume that many lives have been saved over the years because of the cantilevered platform edges.

It seems WMATA hasn't updated the stats since 6 PM though...

Based on what I read over at railroad.net WMATA may not be able to publish an accurate boarding total.

I think in the video, you hear a WMATA employee saying the gates are open and you need not have a card ready, just keep moving. Even an inaccurate count can tell us what ridership was at a minimum, and hopefully WMATA instructed staff to record for how long fares weren't collected at each station, so estimates could still be done in theory.

If WMATA had the gates open, the ridership count won't reflect anyone who didn't process a farecard to enter the system.

Ok. I don't think they should have had the fare gates open.

Why not? They wanted to get people through the station as fast and safely as possible.

To collect fares and count the people! If anything, let people exit for free if it get to an emergency situation, but don't let them enter without swiping.

I doubt many people were going against the flow at the times and locations they didn't collect fares so it wouldn't have made much difference.

Lifting someone from that angle is harder than you think. I don't know the physics of it, but I'm sure it's an ordeal. There's a technique you need and about 2 to three people. And yes, she may have been heavy.

I wonder how she got down there?
