Excuse me for sounding stupid, but I know close to nothing regarding the New York Subway.Does the MTA actually "drown" subway cars when they get old? Is there a reason for doing this? How long has this been going on? Is this not extremely wasteful? Can they not recycle them in some way? I am just shocked to learn that this evens occurs. |

Yes, the MTA has been doing this since the year 2001...With the redbird cars. The reason for this is to create "artificial reefs", while there ARE better ways of doing this. And yes, it IS wasteful. They claim it is cheaper to do it this way, because the cars have some asbestos, which would have to be remediated if they want to scrap them. Funny it didn't stop them when they scrapped the LIRR M1 cars. Stainless steel is expensive, and a good material. The grade used on those cars is very high quality. Reefing regular steel cars is not as bad, I guess, but stiill, a WASTE. It is shocking, because it is wrong. The MTA managment is very corrupt, and they really are too clumsy, and just plain idiotic, not to mention, they are liars, and play politics too much. |

Before 2001, they would scrap the trains, and recycle the metal. They did the same thing with the LIRR M1s(a few years ago), except they shipped the cars to mexico to be scrapped. The artificial reefs are working, and if you go to these sites: http://njscuba.net/reefs/site_nj02sg_path_cars.html http://newjerseyscuba.net/reefs/site_nj_redbirds.html http://newjerseyscuba.net/reefs/site_nj_brightliners.html you can see more info there. |

His village posted, wanting their idiot back, but when he got there they took one look and wanted a refund.the reef project is much less expensive than having the cars scraped. New Jersey, Delaware and the other states who are part of the project keep asking for more and more cars, to the point there are not enough to go around. Asbestos is only harmful airborn, so this is a not only a safe, but a green way of disposing of the cars. |

There is nothing shocking about making a fiscally and environmentally sound decision. There is nothinc corrupt, idiotic, clumsy, or wrong about it.IIRC, the only reason the M1s were not sunk like the redbirds was that there are no suitable barge loading spots from the commuter rail maintenance facilities. |

The cars dumped in the ocean are providing a scaffold for fish and crustaceans. They are serving a very useful environmental purpose. The definition of recycling is reuse of material. The subway cars are being reused. It's better to reuse a subway car for that than to use virgin materials (requiring more energy) to make artificial reefs. |

Thank you for repeatedly PROVING that your BEHIND has a limitless supply of BULL, and your MIND has a lack of KNOWLEDGE and SENSE.Reusing would be to REBUILD THE CARS. This "reefing" is a glorified garbage disposal. Plus, you obviously don't realize how much energy goes into making new stainless steel. |

By the early 1970s, use of asbestos probably abated in a huge way.I actually wouldn't bet on the R44/46s being reefed when they're retired, but that depends on how much, if any, contaminants are being used as insulation. |

"I actually wouldn't bet on the R44/46s being reefed when they're retired,"And you'd be partially correct. The R-44s overhauled by MK had asbestos abatement done as part of the overhaul but the R-44s done in Coney Island did not - or was it the other way around? I don't know for sure about the R-46s. |

Some on here tend to think that no one at NYCT is aware of the going cost for stainless steel recovery, but they fail to take into account regulatory difficulties that come into play given the materials used in rolling stock of that era. (I have even heard a high-up politico (who shall remain anonymous) saying, this year, that the reefing of cars should be looked into, said in a way that suggested that s/he would be able to make political hay out of it!).As for which sets had the abatements done, if YOU don't know, then I definitely don't know! I'd speculate, though, that asbestos abatement was at least somewhat fiscally feasible on the 1970s-era cars because by then many manufacturers were likely using less of the stuff, although they probably still used it for certain insulation applications. |

Retired cars years ago actually met the torch and were cut up. Naporano was one company that I recall scrapping many a beloved subway car type. Nowadays with asbestos being an issue, and many forms of sea life being endangered, retired subway cars now serve as artificial reefs which is more environmentally friendly. K-car has his reservations because he foams over the older car types. Well, who doesn't? But we have our limits and use common sense. Guys like Train Dude, randyo and Westcode44 to name a few are good reference posters because they have, and still work with the equipment to a certain degree. Well, to put it into perspective, asbestos abatement for a subway car in 2004 was about $30,000/car. Hence, dispite what some lesser informed here might claim, reefing makes sense. |
