Thanks for the (partial) confirmation of my suspicion. Some on here tend to think that no one at NYCT is aware of the going cost for stainless steel recovery, but they fail to take into account regulatory difficulties that come into play given the materials used in rolling stock of that era. (I have even heard a high-up politico (who shall remain anonymous) saying, this year, that the reefing of cars should be looked into, said in a way that suggested that s/he would be able to make political hay out of it!).

As for which sets had the abatements done, if YOU don't know, then I definitely don't know! I'd speculate, though, that asbestos abatement was at least somewhat fiscally feasible on the 1970s-era cars because by then many manufacturers were likely using less of the stuff, although they probably still used it for certain insulation applications.
