Yes, the MTA has been doing this since the year 2001...With the redbird cars.The reason for this is to create "artificial reefs", while there ARE better ways of doing this. And yes, it IS wasteful. They claim it is cheaper to do it this way, because the cars have some asbestos, which would have to be remediated if they want to scrap them. Funny it didn't stop them when they scrapped the LIRR M1 cars. Stainless steel is expensive, and a good material. The grade used on those cars is very high quality. Reefing regular steel cars is not as bad, I guess, but stiill, a WASTE. It is shocking, because it is wrong. The MTA managment is very corrupt, and they really are too clumsy, and just plain idiotic, not to mention, they are liars, and play politics too much. |
