He must get targeted based on the way he looks or the way he acts. I know that doesn't make it right, but maybe there's something he could change to make it easier on himself.

What's for certain is that for some or a variety of reasons, Nilet is getting noticed much more frequently than others here. I can't explain why that's the case, if one accepts his accounts as true, but it's definitely the case.

His picture has been posted many times. You can find him in the RFW on most any fan trip thread. He has long hair and by his own account very long fingernails. I have no idea what cops look for, but whatever it is he's got it. Plus there have been some accounts that he is unknowingly obtrusive. I mean no offense by that, but that's what has been posted.

Well, I'll take that assessment on too, but this has gotten to a point where he's unfortunately like a magnet for police attention.

But my point is that sometimes, one accommodates if he wants to go on. The late Thurgood Marshall told a story about when he was with NAACP when he traveled to a particularly small town where the sheriff informed him, in a 'genteel' but pointed way, 'Just so that you know, no nigger has ever made it through a night in this town alive.' Marshall explained that he, therefore, took his constitutional rights with him to the next town, where he slept comfortably.

There are just too many incidents of police officers telling people to stop taking pictures in the subway. Most people reluctantly obey. They may or may not post about it on Flickr or the other photo sites - complaining about how they missed the shot of a lifetime or how the cop threatened them - believe me the stories are there and it is happening. But because the photographer backed off the cop got to enjoy his power trip and doesn't pursue it further.

OTOH Nilet seems to stand up for his rights, tries to argue constitutional law with the cops, and demands names and badge numbers. So you might say he is being punished for being assertive.

The fact is that the cops should not be telling anyone to stop taking pictures. They can question the photographer but they should never stop anyone from engaging in a LEGAL activity.

Well if the person voluntarily stops doing something that violates regulations (for example taking video without a permit) why would the cops want to issue a summons? Issuing a summons in that case would not have any deterrent effect because the person knows that no matter if they stop or not they will still get a summons

Todays back ground checks will show way more than that you want companies to know, and the results are they take better candidates.
Your way of provoking police will at one time backfire on you.

Yes. His appearance will have a much greater impact on a perspective employer than anything that a background check might show.

Of course an appearance is something that you *can* change, the information on a background check is beyond your control. Has he ever been fingerprinted. THAT will stick with you these days.

I was fingerprinted when I joined the Navy, but that was in the OLD days before computerized fingerprint data bases. Today, being printed generates a record, that is there even if there is nothing on it.

*******************

Now for the shaggy dog story.

Before I went into the Navy, I always wore a crew cut. In boot camp they could find precious little to cut off. When I got out of the Navy it was the 1970s man, and to be hip, I grew long hair down to my shoulders. (GACK that was *ugly*)

I applied for a job with Good Humor selling Ice Cream. The district manager said "Not with that hairdo." I said that I would get it cut, and he said cut it if you want, but I will not guarantee that I'll give you a job.

I cam back with a close crew cut (the barber must have been delighted to see me) and he gave me the job on the spot.

First Impressions are the most important. Botch that and there will not be a chance for a second impression.

No joke.

I forget which Scandinavian country that was invaded and occupied by the Nazis it was, but they had extensive demographic information collected on some sort of punch-cards on the population. The Nazis of course wanted to decode that info, but there were only one or two machines in the country capable of reading the data and producing output, and one or both of those were sabotaged, so catastrophe was averted to that extent.

But yes, such databases are susceptible to misuse.

But you do see my point, yes.

The HAIR attracts the officer's attention more than the camera does.
You easily fall into the cop's "profile" as suspicious, then you flit from pillar to post taking pictures of his precious subway layout, and he comes over to check you out.

He has an attitude. You have an attitude. They clash, and then we get to hear about another police encounter.

What you *ought* to do is to get a job as an undercover officer. Ain't nobody going to twig to that until it is too late for them.

Fred, you and Bob V. take some of the nicest train pictures posted anywhere. I would gather that you are both very prolific rail photographers as well. How many encounters have you had with the police over the past year that has risen to this level? I wonder if Bob has had many either.

Didn't Bob get detained by the police along with Nilet on the mid-Winter trip? Or was that someone else?

That was Fred.

And Bob's friend. Bob himself escaped. :D

Also, keep in mind that Bob and Fred (and especially Bob) are "old" when compared to me. Cops are more likely to harass younger people, since we're perceived as being less able to sue or otherwise do something about it.
