No joke.I forget which Scandinavian country that was invaded and occupied by the Nazis it was, but they had extensive demographic information collected on some sort of punch-cards on the population. The Nazis of course wanted to decode that info, but there were only one or two machines in the country capable of reading the data and producing output, and one or both of those were sabotaged, so catastrophe was averted to that extent. But yes, such databases are susceptible to misuse. |
