IND 57 Street station

The last IND station before the Archer line, 57 Street (1968) is perhaps among my favorites. I like the "streamline moderne" design and "clean look" found here, compared to the later 1988 Archer line and the 1930s IND. The "Moderne" style first appeared in the prewar period and was still common into the postwar 1950s. The Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line Dearborn Subway, built around the war and opened in 1951 is in a similar Moderne style to the IND's 57 Street.

Here's some from yesterday:

57th/6th pulls off the modern look better than any other station. Maybe because it still looks clean and bright.

The lady in the second picture looks like she was mad at you. lol

The station is nice, but those stairs are not practical at a station with heavy passenger flow.

Another way of describing it is it was the first of the new stations planned in the 1960s.

I'd love to add an ADA elevator to it. It would not be terribly difficult to do. I'm not saying that because it's high in priority for one, but only because I think it would look cool wth one...

I like the New York-cautiously-suspicious look on the girl in the second picture, not knowing why she was (apparently) being photographed. She didn't know if you were a dating opportunity, a talent agent, a dangerous stalker, or (worst choice) a foamer.

57 Street IND still looks good for its age, even at almost 40. The Archer stations unfortunately do not have the same fate, as they have aged much in just over 19 years.

Partly true. But others have pointed out that there were some unfortunately materials choices at Archer. Also, Jamaica-Van Wyck, one of the archer stations, gets hit by vandals a lot.

I think the Archer stations are handsome designs, though.

They are horrible. The stairs are too narrow. Especially for people with so much luggage going to the airport, or racing to catch a bus at Parsons. There's nothing good about the Archer stations. It's sad to think they're supposed to be "modern".

The stairs are ot too narrow. Parsons in particular is very good. The stairs are wide and there is more than one entrance stair. There is also an ADA elevator and escalators. The bus transfer facility at Parsons is nicely laid out. I have used it often.

Considering the fact that the escalators NEVER WORK, and everyone is forced to take the stairs to the street, the stairs are pretty narrow vs the foot traffic they are expected to handle.

The stairs on the south side of Archer are no more than four feet wide. They can not accomodate people going up and down at the same time. Only in one direction. Usually, you'll bump into someone.

The stairs at Sutphin that go to the subway platforms are pretty narrow. The ones to street level are average, but not wide.

Sutphin isn't that bad either (as of 2004, anyway) and the rebuild of Sutphin to give it the Central Elevator Bank connecting it directly to AirTrainand LIRR was great. Sutphin is the most accessible and convenient of the three.

The roof of sutphin is falling in, there are tents that have been up on the ceiling for years to keep people dry, the lights have been burned out since I started using the station in 1995.

Sutphin is easily one of the 10 worst subway stations in the city.

I do not remember vending machines in the NYC subway at all.
When I was teenager I always wondered what was beyond the station before it was opened up for use and it was the last stop for the K, JFK express and B(?).
