Sutphin was and is very nicely designed and got better with the Jamaica Station rebuild. It's every bit as nice, though more utilitarian, as a WMATA station. A combination of groundwater (a curse i Queens to any construction) and suboptimal materials made it look worse, but I like it a lot. It's one of my favorite stations to use.

That's the tragedy of it all. It has nothing to do with the tiles or the design, it's underlying problems. Amazing that the old IND station tiles in some locations are in better shape than some of the renovations.

I don't believe it's really the materials so much as the labor. We pay 50$ an hour to people who make Somoan huts look long-lasting. And to think the subway was built in 4 years. Disgusting to say the least.

"4) Scales to weigh yourself, I think it was a penny but not sure."

The children's non-fiction book "Barto Takes the Subway" (1961) has the scales and some soda/candy machines featured, aong with R17 6688. I have a old library copy somewhere.

"The bus transfer facility at Parsons is nicely laid out."

I used to transfer to the N4 bus at Parsons often. I eventually got sick of standing outside on sweltering days and freezing days. A real "bus transfer facility" would be indoors and climate-controlled. It would also have seats. I've decided that I'd rather take the LIRR, even though it is significantly more expensive.

I also like 57th/6th. Although it is very plain, it is representative of its era, a time when things were built big, spacious, bright, and plain. Between WW2 and the early 1980s (approx.), intricate designs just weren't fashionable, in most construction.

If 57/6 or, for that matter, Grand Street, ever need major work, I'd hope the original look would be maintained.

On that note, while I think the Broad Street and 8th Ave BMT stations look great now, they were not "restored" in the 90s, they were made-over. The TA, IMO, should have restored the IND look with which both stations were built. It was a good look, nothign wrong with it. I'm not too crazy with the big numbers installed at 42nd and 59th, either.

I disagree. They add a nice touch to two of the more prominent 8th Ave IND stations. What I don't like about 59 St's renovation are the tiny Helvetica "59" captions which just don't fit in, IMO. They should have used the same style as 42/PA or just kept the old caption-tiles and placed them back in.
