My Father told me of the vending machines being all over the system and I have seen them in movies like "Midnight Cowboy" and "Taking of Pelham One, two, three".
But I never saw one, at least the ones that were wedged into the pillars that were small and compact.

I remember the vending machines very vividly. This is what I remember:

1) Gum machines dispensing penny gum, orange in color and a mirror on the upper part. Dentyne gum and Chiclits was dispensed by dropping a penny underneath your selection and turning large round knob. Your gum/candy in a tiny cardboard box would drop to the opening below.

2) 5 cent candy machines red in color mounted on the columns. Dispensed Hershey's candy bars, usually three or four different types. In the flick Somebody Up There Likes Me one can be seen where Paul Newman breaks into one a steals money. The scene was at the Chambers St. station disguised as 14th St !!

3) Large candy/gum machines which were identical to the cigarette machines you'd see elsewhere. They were notorious for stealing your money after dispensing a coin for a certain candy and pulling the plunger, then getting ripped off!

4) Scales to weigh yourself, I think it was a penny but not sure.

5) Soda vending machines that dispensed soda for a dime in paper cups with crushed ice. One time I was railfanning and at DeKalb Ave while waiting for a Brighton train I observed a man servicing the machine. When he was finished and wanted to see if it was working right he told me make a selection (gratis). I did, I got my soda for free and that made my day.

Sometimes these machines would screw up with no cup dropping and watching your soda go down the drain or a cup drop down and not getting any soda!

6) There were ice cream vending machines that dispensed ice cream pops and ice cream sandwiches. Cost about a dime, inserted your dime, pressed a button, lifted the door and watched a metal conveyor move up and deliver your ice cream pop. You then reached in and pulled it out.

7) There were also older grapefruit juice vending machines for a dime a cup. One is seen in the shuttle scene where Popeye reboards the shuttle.

8) I also remember peanut vending machines strapped to columns that looked much like the Ford gum ball vending machines with the glass globes. The peanuts looked red in color IIRC.

There were probably other vending machines that were used in the subway system over the years that I don't recall. They were revenue but trash generators. The best thing the TA did was remove them all. But now vending machines have returned, dispensing Metrocards !
