How much did they spend giving half fare metrocards and free passes a couple of years ago? Oh yeah, they were flush then.

Even if it hadn't been done, however, the fare hike would have probably had to happen, short the MTA's boldness in making the tough calls and parking some inefficient buses.

Ah, but without the EMTs, the MTA will have more lawsuits to defend against people who get sick on the subway and aren't treated quickly enough, so they'll *need* those lawyers.... (8-)

If the MTA is really unable to afford the EMTs, then it has MAJOR problems and needs a top-to-bottom cleaning to find out where the waste is.

Keep in mind the MTA's lawyers are already some of the lowest salaries in the industry. But the main problem is 2 Broadway and costs associated with it---and the MTA has basically been told to suck up and pay the overpriced tab. Unfortunately now, it would cost too much to ask some of that lease to be allowed to expire early and move many back-office workers to less-expensive real estate out of the city (as many companies have done).

Of course, the problems with cars ordered under Kalikow's watch are now coming to roost...AFTER he has left and are another major money-eater.

As a matter of interest, is NYCT actually allowed to have its HQ outside the city?

Consider, however, that MTA in-house lawyers aren't allowed to do trials. That could be a way of saving money, however, by having in-house legal staff defend the agency in court. However, in a bit of irony, many of the "improvements" made have caused more lawsuits, such as the slippery tiles (IINM, so bad that the MTA stopped using tiles in station renovations).

The mistakes under Conway and Kalikow are showing up now. The main solution operations-wise will require the union to accept painful cuts and job reductions, and while there is precedent for it in civil service, even with the MTA, I'm not sure if layoffs, particularly in MTA Bus, among union staff, can be avoided in the long run.

The NYCTA isn't...but the MTA can certainly move many of its workers out of the city...but if that isn't possible, the MTA should be trying to centralize ALL of its workers and ALL of its divisions at 347 Madison (currently, the NYCTA uses 3 buildings, 370 Jay Street, 130 Livingston Street, and 2 Broadway, at least, as the sole occupant of each).

I'm sorry to hear that. That program is very useful.

MTA is not required to have EMTs in the station, and having EMTs in subway stations are not "standard of care," so there is no legal liability for not having them. But they do speed up removal of sick passengers and also speed up the arrival of trained people who know CPR and have a defibrillator.

I have personally intervened several times to assist a stricken passenger, and the goal was to stabilize the patient quickly and get him/her out of the subway as soon as possible. We turned what could have been hour-long waits into a ten-minute scoop and run, which got the trains rolling a lot faster.

This is just a proposal at this point, not enacted. I hope MTA reconsiders.

Painful cuts, as in salary cuts? Absolutely not. The cost of living is not a cheap one. If anybody needs salary cuts, it's the greedy executives running the MTA. Suggesting that the workers take pay cuts is not the way to go. We need to be pro-union not anti-union. Anything that would hurt the workers is morally and socially unacceptable. Perhaps you need to re-evaluate your view on the world.

I think it behooves the MTA to have some med staff onhand to prep sick people so regular EMT's can whisk them out of the system and MTA can keep the trains moving.

That attitude is exactly why NYC almost went down the shitter during the 1970s. I do agree with you the excecutives need to cut both their pay and staff. But productivty increases and layoffs need to happen to all bloated government agencies.

Or, the MTA might find it easier to contract with hospitals and the Fire Department to have EMTs on hand instead...if the current ones are on the MTA payroll.

Here in Kansas City too. There is a coordinator in the Kansas City MO police department who collects and hands out off-duty assignments. KCPD mandates a minimum hourly rate to have an officer, in uniform, be a security guard at your store.

While he/she is at the store, he/she is in full uniform, armed and has access to the police radio net. The fee charged covers liability too (ie you pay for the officer, and for the privilege of the city's liability to cover you. The officer has immunity from lawsuit due to the tort claims act or equivalent legislation, but the city could still have to pay a claim if the officer did something stupid like beat the crap out of a customer for no reason etc.). The officer then gets paid out of that fee.

They have been "cutting jobs" down here in RTO for the past six years..

They are going to have so many people retiring down here in the next few years in RTO they are going to have to hire to keep up with the service.

A cut in pay? Really?

Im not even going to go there..

RTO makes the Money down here if anything gets "the ax" its up top and the Boss man has already said that...

They get paid by both the MTA and the NYFD. That's called double-dipping.

You think they work for the MTA for free?

The Baltimore cops who do security work get paid both by Baltimore City and the security company. ALL cops in Maryland get their authority from the State.
