A Stupid Question about a walkway |
|
Posted by streetcarman1 on Mon Jun 18 16:40:49 2007 As most of us subway fanatics know, the reason for the closing of the underground walkway from the IRT station(1,2,3) to the 6th Ave lines on 34th Street was due to security issues. My question is this. Why did they not to REDESIGNED the walkway without any of the shops and just make one long corridor like what they have else where in the system? I mean, there some good examples of long straight walkways that are open 24/7. Could it really be a money issue? Plus they could install hidden cameras all over the place. |

Definitely!!!! 100%....Why did they not to: huh? REDESIGNED the walkway without any of the shops and just make one long corridor like what they have else where in the system? insufficient number of people at the time it was closed using this passage at the time I mean, there some good examples of long straight walkways that are open 24/7. yes there be! Could it really be a money issue? yes, at the time transit didn't want to lose more money because of lawsuits Plus they could install hidden cameras all over the place. yes they could do that too. but if they did, everyone would know there were cameras all over the placce and therefore wouldn't do anything in view of the cameras |

The walkway was under 33rd street, or more exactly under the sidewalk on 33rd street.*They* (who ever *they* are) can do NOTHING because the tunnel is on PRIVATE PROPERTY and was never owned by the city, the transit authority or by PATH. The Tunnel was jointly owned by Gimbles and by the hotel that was just west of Gimbles. This of course is *why* it has shops in it. Properly speaking, the tunnel is in what is called the "Vault Space", which while it is under the sidewalk, is in fact part of the buildings, and is on private property. Most buildings used to use that vault for the delivery of coal. It also makes good access to the cellars. You will see stairways leasing to these cellars out side of many shops. Others will have an elevator that pops up from under the sidewalk. Both Gimbles and the hotel were a full block wide, and so could use the 32nd Street vaults for these purposes, and so they built this tunnel mostly to attract people into their stores. You *will*, I presume, remember "Gimbles Bargain Basement". Obviously, when Gimbles closed, and the new owners did not want to be saddled with the upkeep, maintenance and security of the property, it had to be closed. And because they are a part of these existing buildings the city could not really seize them even if it had a mind to do so. I suppose the city *could* lease the tunnel and pay for its upkeep and security, but it is a very narrow tunnel, it does not have the proper sort of exits from it in case of fire or other disaster, and makes a dandy home for the homeless and for thieves. So do not look for this tunnel to ever reappear, unless the merchants in the old Gimbles building *want* to bring it back. In a few years it will be a moot point anyway, as there will be a new tunnel between NYP and Herald Square compliments of NJT. ROAR |

If you look at one of the signs at the 33rd Street entrance, near the credit card MVMs at the underpass, you can still see a sign pointing to that underpass under the current uptown 1 train sign. |

There used to be a walkway under 34th Street? When? There used to be a long narrow underground passageway that connected the H&M (PATH) and IRT (NYCTA). It was a privately owned passageway that was dimly lit by single tube fluorescent lights, had tiled walls and concrete walkways. There were a couple of old storefronts midway that eluded to underground stores years ago, but they were painted over and abandoned. I used that walkway at times and it was scary because it was dark, dingy, smelled of urine and there was only one entrance and one exit at both ends of the passageway. If midway you were assaulted or mugged, you were basically trapped, so walked very briskly throughout and were attuned to footsteps behind you. Midway IIRC there was a bulkhead door midway that was the darkest part of the passageway with a spot muggers could hide. I'm sure people were robbed there and that's what led to the closure of the passageway. That's the best thing they every did, you didn't miss anything. Bill "Newkirk" |

I forgot about that bulkhead door. That would be the dividing line between the hotel and Gimbles. They *were* separate buildings, and that separation had to be protected with a fire wall at that point. Interesting. ROAR |

I've sent a suggestion to Manhattan Mall to reopen it, as it would be good for them to have the nice indoor connection to Penn. Not having to go up to the street could make the difference for a traveller coming to the mall or not.A nice, privately owned passage connecting different buildings spanning a long block, and connecting subway complexes on both sides is at 49th between 6th and 7th. Here is my page on the passage: http://members.aol.com/bdmnqr2/33passage.html |
