There used to be a walkway under 34th Street? When? There used to be a long narrow underground passageway that connected the H&M (PATH) and IRT (NYCTA). It was a privately owned passageway that was dimly lit by single tube fluorescent lights, had tiled walls and concrete walkways. There were a couple of old storefronts midway that eluded to underground stores years ago, but they were painted over and abandoned. I used that walkway at times and it was scary because it was dark, dingy, smelled of urine and there was only one entrance and one exit at both ends of the passageway. If midway you were assaulted or mugged, you were basically trapped, so walked very briskly throughout and were attuned to footsteps behind you. Midway IIRC there was a bulkhead door midway that was the darkest part of the passageway with a spot muggers could hide. I'm sure people were robbed there and that's what led to the closure of the passageway. That's the best thing they every did, you didn't miss anything. Bill "Newkirk" |
