Yes, I know that the 160's are coming; BUT, I also know that the 46's and 68's are sticking around. So, I'll try to stay on those when the 160 becomes the predominant car-type on the road.

Those are one of the worst trains out there I can't wait for all R42 CI Rebuilds to be scrapped.

The only thing I don't like about the R38's is they slide on the final stop. I don't mind working with the R44's. My favorite train of choice is a R 40 Slaint.

I never noticed that about the 38s. I really have no gripe with operating any of the equipment. A train is a train. I'll make adjustments in my operation for a particular consist or a particular model. My gripe with any of the equipment is strictly from an ergonomic standpoint. I prefer standing up much of the time. The controls on a 32 are better suited for my stand-up trip than a 38 (remember, I'm 6'3"). The 40's, 42s and 46s are very comfortable for sitting down. The 44 is an ergonomic nightmare but I find I've gotten used to them. It hasn't chased me off the line yet. :-)

Yikes! The Redbirds were not as quite in that bad shape when they were pulled (the only problems they had, outside of the increasing lack of reliability, were rust holes popping up just about everywhere else).

Also note that the right pantograph gate and windshield wiper were removed. The two rider cars flanking the R-42 also looked stripped for scrapping.

Absolutely, no comparison. Had an RDO a couple of years ago on the A line. GO job. 1 1/2 trips 207 to FR. Was stuck with a cramped R44 for the first round trip. Had an R38 for the last half. I was in heaven. Great acceleration and great brakes. Eventhough I was local in Manhattan and express in Brooklyn, it still was an easy trip. Couldn't say the same for the R44 round trip. Since my body is not used to the R44, my back was sore for a week. I will miss the R38's when they're gone.

Yes, they do. I've had two reversers get "eaten" by CI42's, I couldn't get them out of the controller. The first time, I had a layup to Stillwell Yard and called for an RCI. He had to take apart the controller and hit the reverser out with a hammer and screwdriver. Took about 10 minutes. Second time, I was on the W. Arived at Astoria, couldn't get it out, RCI couldn't get it out either. Had to abandon the reverser and leave it in the controller, Dispatcher gave me a new one.
If I had to work CI42's on a steady basis, I'd need one more piece of equipment: a steel file.

Fleet numbers 4840 to 4949. Lower numbered cars are assigned to ENY shop, higher numbered cars assigned to CI shop. Heavy work is done at CI Main Shop on both fleets. The dividing line between both barns is somewhere in the 4920's.

Hmmm, that may explain why the operator of an R160B I was on seemed to stop short at three different stations on the Sea Beach line a couple of weeks ago.

New tech trains are a different animal altogether, if you are used to two handles, then that single controller takes ajusting.

Then theres those black boxes...

I work with those R142's so im kinda used to it,as well as two handles.

Once you learn to operate them in wet weather is not so bad..

That happened to me on an R44 at Far Rock. Since the controller is locked in direction when that occurs the rewards are great.

Might be a bit lower than that - saw my good friend #4918 (Nose:#4726)
on the "N" on Tuesday, swinging into QBP. That car has the best AC of any of the CI 42's.

Me neither. I first operated the R38s during the GOH changover and even after they tinkered with BC pressures and relay valves, they always stopped in a predictable fashion except pre-GOH. THe thing I hated about the slants was their truck hunting and lateral motion. Other than that, the R44 was really bad before they were stripped of their blue stripes. They had OK dynamic braking, sometimes rubber banding like PRE-GOH R32s, but had piss poor friction. Many times you used dymanic to stop short and hoped in full service during the friction brake function, you guessed right. Full service stopped better than emergency in PRE-GOH post P-wire R44s. But a train is a train and the checks keep a coming.
