I first operated the R38s during the GOH changover and even after they tinkered with BC pressures and relay valves, they always stopped in a predictable fashion except pre-GOH. THe thing I hated about the slants was their truck hunting and lateral motion. Other than that, the R44 was really bad before they were stripped of their blue stripes. They had OK dynamic braking, sometimes rubber banding like PRE-GOH R32s, but had piss poor friction. Many times you used dymanic to stop short and hoped in full service during the friction brake function, you guessed right. Full service stopped better than emergency in PRE-GOH post P-wire R44s. But a train is a train and the checks keep a coming. |
