That car WAS tagged...about three to five months ago.

Now that I've remembered that car number, that car has always had graffiti "residue" left on it from when they tried to clean it and did a horrible job. If you look closely at the car today, you'll see some very faded "colors" on the side of the train, as well as in the doorway, and the doorway "step".

This car has not been tagged in months. The picture is most likely real, but old.

I made the Disnyland comparison myself, on my trip to the city last month. I remember thinking how much cleaner it (not just the subway, but the whole city) was. Even compared to the early '90s, when I used to visit regularly, the difference is noticable.

What I want to know is, how did this little miscreant get access to the train in the first place?

Have security measures gotten lax, since the problem was origianlly wiped out in the late '80s?

Look, I see your point, but please see ours as well.

In the early 80s, I was still pre-teen to very early teen, but I remember the appearance of the trains and stations crystally clear. There were few, if any, naturally-painted, tiled, or cemented parts of the subway system. True, some of the graffiti were well-executed, but the overall air of the system was sinister and uninviting.

Everything was filthy, crumbling, and exuded the hint that further danger lurks not too far away. You always felt like a lamb going to slaughter, either as a target on a platform, or subject to roving gangs of wolf packs or mechanical breakdowns on the trains themselves. The whole system either smelled of something burning, or of urine.

Each night on the news, there would seemingly be some new screwup either caused by mechanical breakdown (more like the machine just couldn't take it anymore and outright disintigrated), or by the ingenuity and ferocity of the crime detailed. I remember the story of some idiot running around Ely Avenue with a meat cleaver. He wasn't caught for some time before doing a lot of damage to straphangers.

The subway was a place nobody wanted to be; not even if they had to be there. Unlike today.

Graffiti have sort-of reinvented themselves as "ghetto chic," commissioned by legitimate "artists" looking to make money or expose their talents to the public and have little, if any, malice toward the establishment. But in the 80s graffiti weren't ghetto chic. They were a message that authority and law and order weren't in control, and that all hope should be abandoned once entering the scrawled halls.

I hope you can now understand and appreciate our desire for keeping graffiti as far OFF subways and buses and other public fixtures as much as possible.

Sorry, but you need to realize that some graffiti is actually tasteful.

Sorry, but YOU need to realize that there is a time and place for everything, and graffiti have NO place on public fixtures. If the City wants to commission a mural on the side of its subway cars, garbage trucks, buses, or what-have-you, that's the City's business, not the business of some renegade artist/thug wanting to make a name for himself.

The whole point of grafitti is to be seen. You put a piece up, you want other people to see it. If it doesn't stay up or the the train doesn't leave the yard then no one sees it and you lose. It's a game of who's smarter/braver/etc.

The thing about scratchiti and even the glass etching stuff is that it doesn't show up nearly as well as a piece on the outside of a train. Again, if you can't read it, or worse, other people can't read it, then there's no point in doping it except for those people out there who do it just to piss other people off. Again, it's a game - challenge authority, you win.

That level of vandalism on rolling stock should not be tolerated.

Correct, but....

Whoever is responsible for letting it out on the road in that condition should be disciplined.

Well.... no. It may have been the last available trainset in the yard to cover peak service - you're saying that it's more important to not have a car running with a slight bit of graffitti on it that providing all the timetabled service? You'd rather have one less train running on the line - just so no-one has to see a poxy little piece of 'artwork'?
