If you aren't a liar, and if my supposed actions were so awful that you wouldn't want to associate with me, then you should have no problem recalling my supposed actions and telling me them privately via email. Subtalk at railfanwindow dot com. If you can't, then you're just like Ron - making accusations but refusing to back them up.

No problem, amigo and I likewise meant no personal offense. Like I said, I can appreciate a good vent. I've personally seen some really bad behavior, too, although I think the MOD attendees were sterling compared to some who attended the Metro North fantrips (and some of these were old-school railfans, some of whom consider themselves on the Orion's belt of railfan gods). I also agree that only a sphincter with ears would constantly post photos of somebody else's on-the-job errors to the internet (no, not anomolies like weird roll sign settings or badly proofread GO posters).

IMO, it's probably a good thing in the long run that some of these fantrips are suspended. If the threat of them being taken away for bad behavior would more seriously hang over railfans' heads, it might curtail the bad behavior. That or onsite corporal punishment...

your pal,
Fred

THANK YOU! I've joined the TM and signed up for the July 22 trip. It will be on Lo-V's. Now I'm kicking myself for not checking out the Transit Museum's web site recently. I would have loved to go on the High Line trip (used to live across the street from it, on Horatio Street, when there were actually trains running on it) as well as the City Hall station tour. Oh well, shame on me.

The couplers on the prewar IRT eguipment were "J" series. They were not fully automatic as the H series but only semi automatic in that they contained the air connections within the drawhead. J couplers, however could not be coupled to H couplers without damaging the tappets on the H coupler due to the air connections being at different angles. The air connections on a J drawhead were at 90 degree angles to the front of the car whereas the air connections on a H drawhead are at 45 degrees. Also H drawheads had tappets on the air connections which automatically opened and closed when cuts and adds were made. J drawheads had open gasket sockets which required that air connections between cars had to be manually opened and closed for cuts and adds. Also the actual coupler locks on H drawheads were pneumatically operated from cutting valves inside the M/M's cab or under the car whereas the J couplers had to be manually unlocked for cuts. Both couplers locked automatically upon coupling. To my knowledge, the museum Low-Vs have had standard H drawheads installed in order to provide ease of coupling to conventional equipment in the event they would have to be towed. Of course with the newer equipment having Ohio Brass type drawheads, an adapter would be required in such a case anyhow.

Been 35 years now for me since last I climbed ... wow. Heh. Back then though, I was amused at how many different couplers I spotted at Coney on those LoV's in the back with "WM" on them. Then it was explained to me why that was. And yeah, still have my "magic fork" from the old days of cuts and adds at 168th when the AA ran. Lucky enough to pick up some of that duty in the AM's when the B's needed to be turned into something else there. :)

Still, the cobbage you guys have nowadays beats all hell out of dragging along an extra car or two just to make up a work train.

Reservoir air (which does the real work) is controlled by the brake pipe. It all works. In freight trains, all of the air comes from the locomotive's compressor with little bottles along the trainlength to hold it. And you're MOST welcome!

The difficulty in breaking the train had nothing to do with the
mechanical reluctance of the couplers. It had everything to do
with the electrical reluctance of the BUs to take power.

Truly amusing at Branford when W3 is out on the main and there's a trolley or two rolling. 1689'll dim the lights right out. In Jeff's case though I was referring to the Rockaway area which is kinda like Branford for "watts for tots" ... dunno if things have improved out there, but used to be there were a number of spots which were below 500 volts and some cars won't run at a reduced voltage ... since the BU's were built for BRT's cheesy distribution system though, comes as a surprise that THEY were unhappy ...

To answer theoriginal poster's question: We trasferred from the R1-9's to the BU's on the centertrack (near Rockaway Blvd). The R1/9's proceded us (empty as allthepassengers wentintothe BU cars (it was their first timein use). TheR1/9's were there in case we broke down and had to be towed. The people yousawinthe BU's were transit personnel, (so thatregular passengers would not try to enteratthe underground stations. The M.O.D. trips (or Transit Museum trips)have now been starting at Columbus Circle. When the route wason the Eatern Division (I remember twice), we started at Chambers Street.
