IIRC, one car's motors were reversing. (I could be wrong). They cut the trip short after that and we boarded southbound revenue trains to get back downtown. |

Posted by SilverFox on Wed May 17 18:39:33 2006, in response to Re: TM Nostalgia Train - Destinations announced, posted by Howard Fein on Wed May 17 13:48:26 2006. I second that. A typical MOD trip would go to three or four different outer terminals and often use trackage not usually in revenue service. Fine. So then maybe the Transit Museum trips can cover the same ground and for the same reasons in three or four civilized and well-balanced trips than one marathon session where if you've seen one yard or one outpost of the system, you've seen them all. If we did go to the yards, I would then have liked to have seen the interiors of some of the rider cars in the yard, but that is something we probably would've never seen anyway. The outsides of the cars were all made uniform in the late '80s. It is the insides that are the differentiating factors nowadays, and that will never be revealed, sad to say, due to some very decent liability concerns. The non-revenue trackage we traverse is minimal at best, usually consisting of a siding used for relays, or a junction not normally used to get to another line. At most, two minutes of the itinerary. BFD. Like a shmuck I've always tried to feel the difference between riding revenue rails and those which haven't been used. Other than some very insignificant and barely perceptable changes in perspective, there ain't no difference. No need to say "Shhhh! We're going over the actual diamond crossing between the Astoria Line and the Flushing Line. Hear those wheels grinding the barely-used rails!" because it just doesn't happen. I can't speak for others on here, but after about a half-dozen of the MOD trips, I started questioning my desire to be on them because they lasted too long for any responsible adult, took too much out of me, began to all feel "the same," were run too often, and weren't really a good place to socialize. I went anyway, and began to hate myself more until I flat out stopped going altoghether at some point near to the end of the trips' complete cessation. This is not to say they weren't professionally run, coordinated, planned, and executed. They were wonders of urban railroad engineering and choreography from a technical perspective. But they were just too much of what was once a great thing. Everybody tells me that MTA's bigwigs read this board as if that were some sort of warning to me to stay away from promoting the Establishment's stance on matters you are working against. Maybe they sense that, and purposefully work against (y)our interests as they see what (y)our interests attract. Couldn't it be that we could all work with them as maybe adjunct ambassadors to their efforts, however limited they may be in our interests, so that we can be further trusted with more and enhanced programs going forward? Who knows, if we all volunteered at the Transit Museum or as crewmembers on the trains, or sharing our picture databases with the Museum showing these cars in fantrip service, they may reward us with an exclusive ten-hour marathon cruise throughout the system and the privilege of thoroughly dismantling an about-to-be-scrapped set of cars for whatever souvenirs we want. Maybe they won't now; maybe they won't ever, but we have to try. Right now, I don't believe the railfan community, as defined by this board, has the power to police its membership and its voice. We're still too far into the deep end. Make our hobby/obsession an amateur "profession" and maybe we will be treated as such. We now have to make the first move and extend the first olive branch. |

I don't mean any disrespect, but are you senile? We were talking about the MOD trips, circa 2003-2005. You called a trip from ~1994 a "MOD trip" and used the behavior you supposedly witnessed as proff of what some people describe as the norm on the MOD trips. 1. YOU WEREN'T ON A MOD TRIP. 2. 1994 WAS A DIFFERENT ERA 3. I'd say at least half the participants on the MOD trips were not part of the NYC railfan scene in 1994. 4. I doubt any of these "rabid foamers" you supposedly saw were on the MOD trips Bottom line, you are a weak person who allows your fear of others to not only keep you from enjoying something (a vintage subway ride), but also keeps you from giving it a second try 11-12 years later. It also makes you hold a grudge and take every opportunity to talk bad about those "NYC foamers." Get a life. |

But there is a difference between witnessing something first-hand, and hearing it second-hand. The people telling these stories are likely obviously and understandably bitter about the trips being canceled. And a lot of things don't add up, since for many of the "problems" given as reasons as to why the MOD trips were ended, it seems like there were "solutions" that could have been tried first. |

I loved every one of them, appreciated every out-of-the-ordinary aspect, and experienced every one of them as if it were the last one, because I knew it was too good to last for ever. Brian, I appreciated, and even became very excited and anxious, about every out-of-the-ordinary aspect of each trip. I probably still would. But the amount of out-of-the-ordinary to merely routine outside the rolling stock itself is probably 1:40. If the purpose of MOD trips is to showcase the unusual, they can be run as three or four hour trips highlighting one or two unusual aspects of the system. How much longer is sanely necessary? Going from the F line to the J line, or going from the J line to the L line on the same train isn't something I will regale my coworkers with. Traveling on the express track of the Dyre Avenue line isn't going on my resume. "Ya wanna ride Track BJ1 with me?" is NOT a pickup line. If these are such earth-shattering and deeply-chronicled memories to you, you may be interested in membership in the Raccoon Lodge. If you win Raccoon of the Year, you can open the first clam at the annual clambake, pilot the Raccoon boat past Raccoon Point, and get you and your wife free burial plots in Bismarck, North Dakota. You may even be called upon to throw the first bag of water over the hotel balcony at the Raccoon Convention. Those are some REAL accomplishments! Perspective. |

Well the ones I were picturing were about late-20s to early-40s, wearing shorts and bikini tops (it can happen!), friends for eternity, who heard about the trip through one of their fathers or brothers, and thought the trip would be something different, and a place to maybe find a guy or give their boyfriends the slip for the day. They still have smiles on their faces and are excited about riding the old train. None of the obsessives or other undesirables have accosted them yet. THOSE are the ones I am talking about. Most of them were NOT MTA cars. They were sold off and now belong to a differententity. Partially correct. "Most" would imply at least 50% of the fantrip cars were privately owned. I don't think that is the case. The 4 Lo-V cars and 1 or 2 of the R1-9 cars are private, but most of the cars that were involved in the 2004 festivities, including the BUs and the "classic SMEE" cars, are NYCTA-owned. |
