I definitely want to see Bauman, who graduated MIT and is therefore extremely intelligent, roll in on this wolk guy and his so-called data. Bauman, with his charts and interpretive data, would wolk all over Joshua, that much I do know.Did you hear about all the gun violence in Newark over the weekend? It stretched from near the Passaic River into downtown and out to West Newark, a place I warned you people to avoid. Anyway, although my research is preliminary, there were a number of ShotSpotter notifications and most of the actors are on the run. The victims are/were being treated at Beth Israel Medical Center and the Shock Trauma unit at University Hospital. One guy was gunned down on Lyons Avenue... of course he was, because again, why not? The downtown shooting was right at Broad and Market late at night and was about one block from Hobby's, the renowned Jewish-style delicatessen that is not yet certified Kosher as far as I know. Sadly, the victim was pronounced. |

It gets a decent crowd, nothing huge. Maybe 30-50 people get off a morning rush hour train there.2. In 2060 or whenever, it will connect with the Second Avenue Line. |

Newark violence just isn't much of an attention getter. It's overshadowed by New York violence.Newark should be it's own tv market and then these crimes would get more attention. LOL @ Josh is Wolk. I don't know if Bauman would debate him. Josh Wolk looks like a 3 meter diver. Not a Lacrosse player. |

Newark violence just isn't much of an attention getter.Alright but I'll continue to do what I can otherwise people will die. Now I realize this is the wrong board so I'll end my participation in this thread but did you hear about the early release from prison of the Colombo associate Vito "The Cleaver" Guzzo Jr.? He pleaded guilty to a handful of murders and only served twenty-something years before getting out last month. In court back in 1998, he described his crimes without emotion: "I killed Ralph Sciulla by shooting him in the head", he told the judge, reading from a piece of paper. "I killed Anthony Mesi by shooting him. I shot John Borrelli." As part of my ongoing research, I came across the following gem referring to Guzzo Jr. on a message board : Stand up guy, I was behind him at the McDonald’s drive thru, he orders like a gentleman. I thought that was pretty good. |

The L train used to be so crowded that I know people who got on at 6th or Union Square and went back to 8th Ave just to get a seat.Rush house PM trains going to Brooklyn were at capacity by the time they reached Union Square. Getting on at 3rd or 1st would be a task. My guess is the turnstile count at 3rd Ave is sufficient for MTA. |

If I get on a train at 8th in the PM rush hour, when the train pulls in not everyone gets off. There are now 18 trains arriving at 8th between 7:37 AM and 8:35. There used to be a max of 15 in an hour. |

CBTC braking headways are 8 seconds longer than a properly designed fixed block system. That's part of the problem. A second problem is the direction reversing time at 8th Ave. A third is the software they use to make up the schedules. |

Another issue is announcements. They take longer than when the conductors made them. Trains are losing at least 5 seconds per station it seems. |

No.The automated announcements are computerized. But the conductor can shut the doors before the announcement finishes to speed things up. They're aren't supposed to do this and can be written up for it. |

If there's a chance within even 200 years that this station would connect with the SAS, you absolutely keep it intact, no matter what.Meanwhile, it's technically possible the station is currently doing more harm than good, but another thing to look at besides the high majority of passengers just riding through (as happens at many stations anyway) is whether the train would get held up somewhere else because of the 8th Ave relays. Basically, would the trains be spaced (or even a train removed from the line?) such that you'd get all the way into 8th Ave a minute faster, or would the train just sit around somewhere else and give away the saved time? IMO with the current L train operation unless an actual full train is being removed from the line, it's not likely that the other trains will be getting all the way back and forth (between 8th Ave and Canarsie) any faster. On railroads where timed connections are often key, sometimes a single stop is skipped as part of a regular service pattern just to help ensure a big connection (such as where many trains are expected to arrive somewhere at the same time to enable lots of passenger connections). The connection is, in this case, deemed more important than serving one additional station. But none of that applies on something like the L train, which isn't running with timed connections in mind. |
