Posted by New Flyer #857 on Sat Oct 10 08:31:21 2026, in response to Some guy is suggesting the closure of 3rd Ave on the L line, posted by LuchAAA on Tue Oct 6 18:27:03 2026. If there's a chance within even 200 years that this station would connect with the SAS, you absolutely keep it intact, no matter what.Meanwhile, it's technically possible the station is currently doing more harm than good, but another thing to look at besides the high majority of passengers just riding through (as happens at many stations anyway) is whether the train would get held up somewhere else because of the 8th Ave relays. Basically, would the trains be spaced (or even a train removed from the line?) such that you'd get all the way into 8th Ave a minute faster, or would the train just sit around somewhere else and give away the saved time? IMO with the current L train operation unless an actual full train is being removed from the line, it's not likely that the other trains will be getting all the way back and forth (between 8th Ave and Canarsie) any faster. On railroads where timed connections are often key, sometimes a single stop is skipped as part of a regular service pattern just to help ensure a big connection (such as where many trains are expected to arrive somewhere at the same time to enable lots of passenger connections). The connection is, in this case, deemed more important than serving one additional station. But none of that applies on something like the L train, which isn't running with timed connections in mind. |
