I missed out riding the Qs on that last day because the announcement said the service would end at midnight on Saturday, which I mistakenly thought meant midnight at the end of Saturday, not at the beginning.

When I got to Metropolitan Av Saturday afternoon, I found two arnine M trains waiting at the platform. Eventually I figured out what had happened. While waiting on the platform, one of the M trains left, and the Q fan train pulled in, loaded with people with cameras. The doors didn't open and the train left again, still loaded.

When I later took an M train past the yard, I got lots of photos of the Q trains all lined up, in addition to the photos I got of the fan train in the station.

In the late '60s I had ridden the Qs several times, mostly for fun. They had actual canvas straps.

This was the Sunday fan trip:

I remember seeing the Q cars on the Myrtle Ave. el as they passed over the Broadway el station from the RFW of Curly Joe trains. I thought, man, they look old. Truth be told, I felt the same way about the BMT standards the first time I saw them, too. Never rode on the Qs, though.

Ridgewood, Queens always felt like an extension of Brooklyn. One reason was the 4 and 6 family homes. The other was the Myrtle Ave el connecting Ridgewood to the "downtown" business district of Brooklyn which was so important back then.

Refresh my memory. When the MJ service ended, what service change did this bring to the M line?

Prior to October 1969 the "M" train ran between Metropolitan Avenue during rush hours. When the "MJ" was discontinued the "M" would run M-F from 6 AM to 7 PM. During other times an ""SS" shuttle would run between Metropolitan Avenue and Myrtle Avenue on the Broadway-Brooklyn Line.

But what was the Manhattan terminal for the M following the end of service to Jay Street?

I know it varied between Broad St and Chambers St.

I've read articles about people on the M complaining that terminating at Chambers was inconvenient because so many worked in the Financial District along Fulton and Broad St stations.

Throughout the sixties the Manhattan terminal for the No.10 Myrtle Avenue - Chambers Streets trains was of course Chambers Street.

Effective on July 1,1968 these trains by now designated as "M" were extended to Broad Street.

They remained a rush hour only operation until October 1969 when the "MJ" was discontinued. Thereafter service to Broad Street ran M-F from 6 AM to 7 PM.

IINM Moe trains also ran express between Myrtle Ave. and Marcy Ave. in the peak direction during rush hours.

That is correct. The No 15 trains ran express between Eastern Parkway and Essex Street stopping only at Myrtle Avenue.

The No. 10 trains ran express between Myrtle Avenue and Marcy Avenue.

It should be noted that the switches between the express and local tracks were local east of the Marcy Avenue station. So No. 15 trains ran non-stop through the station on the local tracks.

That wasn't always the case. They used to be west (rr north?) of Marcy Ave. Before the connection of the 14th St Line to Atlantic Ave, all Canarsie trains operated as Broadway-Brooklyn Locals to Canal St. The original switch position, permitted the BMT to operate 52 tph in the preferred direction over the Williamsburg Bridge (and 30 tph in the reverse direction).

My theory is that moving the switch was motivated by the desire to eliminate a tower position at Marcy. Locating the switch east of Marcy permitted remote operation.

I believe that the new switches were placed in service in February, 1960.

Effective on February 23,1960 Myrtle-Chambers Expresses began stopping at Marcy Avenue.

I was lucky enough to ride the Q cars on the 3rd Ave el, as well as the Myrtle Ave line. Luckily, I was able to make two round trips on Oct 3rd, 1969.

As originally planned, Essex St Master Tower was to have controlled the Marcy Ave interlocking so lo ating the switches east (RR south) of the station would mean that all trains would stop at Marcy and M/M would then use the route selector to notify Essex St how to line up the train. Although the interlocking is now controlled by ENY Master Tower, the end result is still the same.

The basic problem was that remote towers did not have train identification, along with its presence at an interlocking. The problem was solved on the Flushing Line by using the Identra system.

London Transport used a different system that dated to the 1930's. They used a primitive computer, based on a jacquard loom that identified train routes and automatically set the switch. It also rules for overriding merge order, if a train were late.

What was the identification issue on the Flushing Line since all trains running there shared identical origin and destination?

When did they stop using the Identra system?
As a kid riding the 7 line, I never knew what those flat shaped metal panels were used for.

Me neither. I was clueless riding the 7 train to Shea Stadium all those years. It was another thing the motormen had to carry around.

They did NOT all have the same origin and destination. Some AM locals were put in at 111 St. At least one AM express was put in at Willets Pt. N/B selected AM lcls terminated at 111 St and in the PM some N/B lcls terminated at Willets Pt. During the 1964/65 World’s Fair, N/B lcls that laid up in Corona Yd terminated at Willets Pt instead of 111 St.
