Tuscarora Almanac for August 3
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Aug 3 08:49:15 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for August 3 1908 – from The Book of First Runs The Market Street Subway in Philadelphia is extended from 15th Street to 2nd Street 1912 – from The Book of First Runs The New York, Westchester and Boston Railroad is extended from 180th Street to the Harlem River. 1950 - from The Book of First Runs BMT Q-Types (no QX’s) are assigned to service on the IRT Third Avenue EL. They will replace the remaining Composites by April 28. 2003 – from The Book of Last Runs The Harmon Cove station on the Bergen County Line is closed. Beginning on Monday August 4 Bergen County Line trains will begin stopping at the lower level of the Secaucus Junction station. Beginning on Monday August 4 Bergen County Line trains will begin stopping at the lower level of the Secaucus Junction station. Heh. I remember seeing real estate ads for an apartment complex right near the Harmon Cove station. I thought wait, what, until I realized the trains only went to Hoboken. But the second gotcha is that then the trains went away altogether.

Did they get assigned to work service on the Myrtle Avenue elevated line since steel subway cars could not run there?

Another couple of QX's were used as pump car trailers, those languished at the dead line for years until getting scrapped for parts (that other BU's might live) about a dozen years ago. I've seen some photos of a few "baldie" QX's (cleastory completely removed) painted grey and used as rider cars on elevated lines. I think there is a spreadsheet of the disposition of all Q's and QX's about.

"Baldy" #1639 at Bay Pkwy of Sea Beach line. (Sept. 1955) "Baldy" QX #1640 at 45th Rd - Court House Square, #7 Flushing line. Repainted "Baldy" QX #1640 36th St yard. (April 1960) QX #1642 alongside "Baldy" #1639 at 36th St yard QX #1642 coupled to "convertible" #1326 at 36th St yard QX "Baldy" at 40th St (Lowery) on the #7 Flushing line. #QX "Pump Train" at 36th St yard (October 1, 1969)

There are two photos posted here. On Subchat you just posted some Q car photos, including one of car 1634A. This photo is actually at 239th Street Yard. Also, the reason it was there is that they were experimenting with 7 car trains. Notice the door controls and and tail lights under the steps, none of which you would see on the blind end of a Q car. They were added to this one. Rush hour through expresses and local-expresses were 7 cars. Here’s a photo from Dave Klepper of a composite train at 23rd Street on the 3rd Avenue el to show the 7 car operation with Composites, which is what they had intended to match. Didn’t work out for whatever reason.

The Q-Type marker lights were located outside of the clerestory roof of the cars when they ran in Queens. When they were transferred to the United States proper (i.e. 3rd Av El) it was necessary to move the lights closer to the middle of the roof. The roofs of the platforms on the 3rd Avenue El had too much of an overhang. Larry, RedbirdR33

Refer to James Grellers Book, Brooklyn Elevated Railroads, Page 173. He states that after the Flushing and Astoria were split cars 1615, 1680 and 1634A were sent to the IRT for testing a seven car train on the 3rd Avenue El. It was found that the BU trucks were two heavy for the older portion of the el . So they were replaced with trucks from the Composite. I guess that they decided that a six car train of two Q-Type would be sufficient for service so 1634A went in to work service. Larry, RedbirdR33
