Bill: Firstly let you thank you for an excellent collection of photos.

The Q-Type marker lights were located outside of the clerestory roof of the cars when they ran in Queens. When they were transferred to the United States proper (i.e. 3rd Av El) it was necessary to move the lights closer to the middle of the roof. The roofs of the platforms on the 3rd Avenue El had too much of an overhang.
