I received an e-mail explaining why this lone QX car was at 239th St yard, not East 180th st yard. There are two photos posted here.

On Subchat you just posted some Q car photos, including one of car 1634A. This photo is actually at 239th Street Yard. Also, the reason it was there is that they were experimenting with 7 car trains. Notice the door controls and and tail lights under the steps, none of which you would see on the blind end of a Q car. They were added to this one. Rush hour through expresses and local-expresses were 7 cars. Here’s a photo from Dave Klepper of a composite train at 23rd Street on the 3rd Avenue el to show the 7 car operation with Composites, which is what they had intended to match. Didn’t work out for whatever reason.
