If you think about it from an electrical connectivity standpoint, even with no knowledge of trains, it has to be that way. The third rail on the left can power the motors, and the third rail on the right can power the motors. Absent any elaborate relays (which would serve no useful purpose and be a likely point of failure), it follows that the left shoes and the right shoes are electrically connected. |

Here you would need a bit of knowledge about trains. But it would seem exceedingly likely that a motor would not be dedicated to an individual truck. (That would sound like a pointless design.) Therefore it would seem exceedingly likely that all shoes on a car are electrically connected. |

If you think about it you realize that all the shoes on a car were most likely connected together on trains with high voltage controls where bus jumpers connected 600 volts dc through the train. However with low voltage controls there might not be a need to connect all four shoes together since that might cause a car to bridge a section gap and energize a dead section of track. The low voltage controls use 32 volts to operate the control circuits so that each car (and most likely each truck on that car) only has to power its own motors from the third rail. |

Like most heypaul questions, it is posed in a typically moronic way. The fact is that all four contact shoes are connected to a common bus. That does not mean that you will get a shock if you touch one. In order to get a shock from any one contact shoe, three conditions must be met.1) the shoe is electrically connected to the bus. 2) at keast one shoe is in contact with a voltage source. 3) the person touching it must be electrically grounded to complete the circuit. |

If they were "tied together" the lights would stay on. I noticed this particularly on the R1-9s |

The gaps between sections on NYCTS and most other 3rd rail systems are long enough so that all 3rd rail shoes lose contact at the same time. Other smaller gaps such as those at switches are short enough so that at least one of the shoes is touching the rail at all times. All 3rd rail shoes on a car are connected and if one is alive, they all are alive. |

No fence no gate, last time I walked by (years) a curious kid could walk right in without passing so much as a "No Trespassing, 750 volts of Smack-You ahead". |
