The gaps between sections on NYCTS and most other 3rd rail systems are long enough so that all 3rd rail shoes lose contact at the same time. Other smaller gaps such as those at switches are short enough so that at least one of the shoes is touching the rail at all times. All 3rd rail shoes on a car are connected and if one is alive, they all are alive. |
