Tuscarora Almanac for May 12

Tuscarora Almanac for May 12

1955 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is May 12, 1955, a Thursday and one of the very dark days in the history of the New York City Transit System.
It is the last day of service on the 3rd Avenue El between the 149th Street Station in The Bronx and the Chatham Square Terminal in Manhattan. The last train left from the Chatham Square Terminal at 6:00 PM. It consisted of six MUDC cars; 1662, 1778, 1753, 1780, 1668 and 1671.

2015 – from The Book of Wrecks

Amtrak’s Northeast Regional Train No. 188 derails at Frankford Junction. The engine and seven cars leave the tracks. Eight people are killed and two hundred injured. The engine, a brand new Cites Sprinter ACS-64 No. 601 was heavily damaged. The seven Amfleet coaches were 81528, 82776, 82644, 43346, 82761, 82797 and 82981.

While understandable, it was vert short-sighted to tear down the EL:

I have said myself if the 3rd Avenue El had been kept, it would have needed a major upgrade during the 1960's that would have allowed the line to handle 10-car trains with many stations consolidated and also rebuilt and in many cases combined like this (stations are express unless otherwise noted):

Chatham Square (where what would if still around today the South Ferry and Battery Park City branches split with the latter terminating at West Thames Street there).

Grand Street (Transfer to B/D at Grand Street and J/Z at Bowery)
Houston Street (local only)
St. Mark's Place (local only)
14th Street (Transfer to L)
23rd Street (local only)
34th Street (local only)
42nd Street (Transfer to 4/5/6/7/S)
50th-53rd Street (Transfer to 6/E/M)

60th-63rd Street (Transfer to 4/5/6/N/R/W on the 60th Street end and the F/Q on the 63rd Street end)

72nd Street (local only)
79th Street (local only)
86th Street
96th Street (local only)
106th Street (local only)
116th Street (local only)
125th Street (MetroCard transfer to 4/5/6)

Bronx:

138th Street (Transfer to 6)
149th Street (Transfer to 2/5)
161st Street (local only)
170th Street-Claremont Parkway (local only)
178th Street-Tremont Avenue
183rd Street (local only)
Fordham Road
Bedford Park Boulevard-200th Street (local only)
204th Street (local only)
210th Street (local only)
Gun Hill Road (terminal, transfer to 2/5)

Branches:

South Ferry (Termanial):
Fulton Street
Franklin Square

Battery Park City Branch:
West Thames Street and Battery Place (Terminal)
Battery Place-Little W Street
Greenwich Street-Battery Place
Rector Street-Trinity Place

Vesey Street-World Trade Center (Transfer to 2/3/A/C/E/R)

Then to Chatham Square via the old route OR if One Police Plaza being built in 1973 forced a move to Chambers Street, running via Chambers to Centre Street with an additional stop at Chambers (Transfer to 4/5/6/J/Z), running via that and then on Centre and then Worth Street to Chatham Square.

There also would be a shuttle train on a single track between West Thames Street and South Ferry as well, also allowing when a GO is on the Battery Park City Branch or if otherwise necessary for trains at West Thames to go to South Ferry and access the South Ferry branch.

The city made the wrong call in the 1940s by keeping the Third Ave El and demolishing the Second Ave line. The Second Ave El was in much better shape, but the thought at that time was that they would soon build a Second Ave subway, and removing the El made that easier. The Third Ave El would only need to last until the new subway was completed.

I agree. Keeping the 2nd Ave El would have made more sense. it was closer to the east side, spreading the passenger load more evenly between the EL and the Lex Ave Subway. Also keeping the link across the QB bridge would have been a win-win in every respect.

The remaining 2nd Ave el to Queens lost a lot of its ridership after the 1939 Worlds Fair closed in October, 1940. Less than 5 months later, late night and Sunday service ended. The ridership back then just was not there, 84 years ago.

Exactly. That was a completely different time and place.

Point well taken on the 2nd Avenue EL (especially since south of 23rd Street it actually was on 1st Avenue), but in the end, and mainly because of potential connections to it 3rd Avenue would have made more sense to keep and rebuild.

And one note: In any such rebuild, originally the 60th Street likely would have been 59th-60th, however, once 63rd Street opened then that stop likely would have been moved to initially allow transfers to the (F) at 63rd and the (Q) once the SAS opened. 60th-63rd on such an EL now would likely have been the busiest station on such version of the 3rd Avenue EL because of all the transferring between lines (including via a roundabout route being able to transfer between the Lexington and 6th Avenue lines without exiting fare control).

Exactly why you should not be so obsessed with "fantasy future elevated lines". The ridership was just not there, even though WW II had started.

As the City grew after the WWII and the 50s economic boom creating more jobs and population, ridership would have grown with it (Roosevelt Island e.g.) But we'll never know. What we do kn ow is that it was a huge mistake tearing down the 2 east side ELs. One (2nd Ave IMO) should have been left up and modernized, staying in operation until a full length 2nd Ave subway is built.

That was something I wrote a while back and is a simple copy and paste for me to put up.

The el did not have a station on Roosevelt/Welfare Island and I’m not sure it would have been practical to build one.
