The city made the wrong call in the 1940s by keeping the Third Ave El and demolishing the Second Ave line. The Second Ave El was in much better shape, but the thought at that time was that they would soon build a Second Ave subway, and removing the El made that easier. The Third Ave El would only need to last until the new subway was completed. |
