Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sat Jan 3 13:25:47 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for January 3 and a Forgotten Station 1961 – from The Book of first and Last Runs BMT Rt. 2 Broadway-4th Avenue Locals replace Rt.1 Broadway-Brighton Local on the IND Queens Boulevard Line. 1983 – from The Book of First Runs Express service returns to the Broad Street Subway in Philadelphia for the first time since 1979. Expresses will operate on weekdays from about 6 AM to 7 PM. Trains will run between Olney and Walnut-Locust stopping at Eire, Girard and City Hall. Expresses will operate non-stop on the local tracks north of Erie. Tuscarora Forgotten Station No. 5 / Mount Loretto Staten Island Rapid Transit Railway Company Tottenville Line Mount Loretto Station Passenger Service Ended: 1939 Mount Loretto station was located on the grounds of the Mount Loretto Orphange on Staten Island. It was reached by a mile long spur from the Tottenville Line of the Staten Island Rapid Transit Railway. The spur connected to the mainline just south of Pleasant Plains station and was mainly used for coal deliveries. Once a month a special train would operate from Saint George directly to Mount Loretto. It consisted of two to three of the ME-1 electric MU’s hauled by a steam locomotive since the spur itself was not electrified. The special trains continued to run until 1939. Freight service lasted until about 1950. Interesting there was a time there was no express service on the Broad Street Line (I presume other than the Ridge Spur, which has always been express I believe). They must have had a really bad shortage of cars by 1979 because they were still using the Brill cars that dated back to the late 1920's before the Great Depression, |

And in 1970, this was the last day of the 20-cent fare. I was in the city that day and still paid 20 cents for a dime-sized token (and even rode on a prewar Abbott train from PABT to 14th St., with no headlights on the lead motor. The 30-cent fate took effect the following day, also a Sunday, with quarter-sized tokens. |

Ridge Avenue was almost shuttle running to Girard. When the express ran the Ridge trains were extended to Erie. The express operation to Olney or Fern Rock did not begin until about 1995. That's interesting as that is after the Spring Garden station on the line closed in 1991 (SEPTA should look at re-opening it as that area is much more residential now than it was then). I never really used it much until the mid-2010's.I believe at one time there was service to South Jersey in the pre-PATCO days using that line. You can see the Chinatown station on the Ridge Spur from the PATCO line where the tracks were cut off. |

I even have one of those dime-sized token dispensers that they used to sell from platform vending machines. |

One of my Powerball fantasies, was to restore the old Broad Street cars and the connection to Patco Line for a special run over the Ben Franklin Bridge. However, I don't reside in Arkansas and I didn't win.The Lurkers' Guild Oh well, maybe the next Billion jackpot... |

I believe at one time there was service to South Jersey in the pre-PATCO days using that line. You can see the Chinatown station on the Ridge Spur from the PATCO line where the tracks were cut off. What you are referring to is the Bridge Line . This was built by the Delaware River Joint Commission (Today's Delaware River Port Authority) which also built the Ben Franklin Bridge. This line ran from 8th & Market over the bridge to NJ with stops in Philly at Franklin Square and in Camden at City Hall and Broadway. When the Locust Street Line opened in 1953 Bridge Line trains were extended to 15/16 Locust whenever that line was open. PATCO took over operation of the Bridge Line in 1969. The original 8 & Market station became part of PATCO. SEPTA built a new station a little north of the original one. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Right, the one also on a level above the original now-PATCO station that is a single track,That station was actually built to handle full 5-6 car trains as were Chinatown, Spring Garden and Fairmount (Ridge Spur station). Much of that platform at 8th and Market since was closed off as the Ridge Spur trains are usually two cars. |
