I believe at one time there was service to South Jersey in the pre-PATCO days using that line. You can see the Chinatown station on the Ridge Spur from the PATCO line where the tracks were cut off.

What you are referring to is the Bridge Line . This was built by the Delaware River Joint Commission (Today's Delaware River Port Authority) which also built the Ben Franklin Bridge. This line ran from 8th & Market over the bridge to NJ with stops in Philly at Franklin Square and in Camden at City Hall and Broadway. When the Locust Street Line opened in 1953 Bridge Line trains were extended to 15/16 Locust whenever that line was open.

PATCO took over operation of the Bridge Line in 1969.
The original 8 & Market station became part of PATCO. SEPTA built a new station a little north of the original one.
