In all fairness, the BMT standards had spur-cut bull and pinion gears as well, and they moaned and groaned in the same manner. |

The GE R-16s through 21s made the whining sound when accelerating. The R-22s made a humming sound which my mother said sounded like a propeller airplane taking off. The sound was from a fan that on those GEs was used to cool the resistor bank unlike the WH cars that had air cooled resistors. |

Those GE equipped cars were much less reliable than their Westinghouse equipped contemporaries. When the R26 cars were introduced GE went back to the older air cooled resistor banks. |

The snowstorm phot on the Rockaway Line is pre 1962. The M/M of the train is the late George J. Abere Jr who became a train dispatcher in 1962 so the photo predated that year. As for the R-4s with bullseye lighting, the other car besides 484 was 744 not 766. Both cars also were equipped with PA systems and were initially supposed to be kept together at the C/R’s position so PA announcements could be made. |

As far as #744 goes, I've never seen any interior photos, it's always #484.On that photo of the late George Abere Jr., the last time I saw him was at a train show at Liberty State Park in 1994.
