Safer Subways - Not So Much

Posted by Train Dude on Wed Jul 16 20:50:19 2025

Granted - it's only one incident unless perhaps you are the one victim. Monday at 6:20 AM, a sleeping rider was stabbed in the head 3 times on the very safe #1 train in very safe harlem. Perhaps he was snoring and his annoying noises provoked the attack. Well fortunately it's in Alvin Bragg land so it will likely be classified asa misdemeanor stabbing.

As sad as this is, overall crime is down.

Subway is safer than ever.

Yes there are tragedies like the one in The Bronx yesterday. This happened at a store.

Streets and subways are safer than ever. Check OT for more details.

Regardless whether this was targeted, which is doubtful, I just do not remember so many random, senseless acts of violent, murderous attacks. Some might say it is no different now than it was 10 or more years ago, with the "uptick" due to things like the pandemic or previous underreporting. I do not even see this as cyclical, the ebb and flow of societal norms for any number of reasons. The last time I was in New York City I took the obvious, simple measure for the first time in my life while riding the MTA; that is, standing back from the platform edge at subway stations.

All of us have mental and psychological issues to one degree or another. Not so much counseling but mental and psychological treatment is critically important for those on the far end of that spectrum but my sense is that incarceration has become, at least to a sizable number of people, an unnecessary, irresponsible, evil, even barbaric means to help ensure the safety of the innocent.

Barely related, since it is by definition "targeted", I just finished reading an article in CNN about femicide in Kenya - I heard of it running rampant in Mexico but not over there... and the world just keeps on a'spinning. The hell is going on?

I agree with you that I don't remember so many random violent acts and for the record, for nearly 30 years, I saw every report, whether it made the media or not. Perhaps it's just perception and fear as I grow older but I suspect that it's more fact that imagination.

It mostly comes down to the number of mentally ill people out there. Years ago, most crime in the subway was mostly for profit as in muggings. These days there are so many loose cannons out there thanks to the collapse of any serious mental illness/drug and alcohol treatment programs. You chase them off the train, they just get on another one.
You never heard of someone just walking up on a complete stranger and pushing him/her on the tracks infront of an oncoming train.
The last time I was on the subway, more and more folks are standing nearer the back wall than near the platform edge. The tension in the air is so thick you could slice it with one of those knives used to stab you in the head with.

Absolutely. I think I heard on TV this morning where some Hollywood mucky-muck and spouse were killed in a break-in by a guy who was too mentally ill to put in jail for his past crimes. In cases like this I'm in favor of the family pet approach. Putting them down is an act of kindness.

Back in the early 70s, crime was bad but, to your point, it was mostly muggings. There were homeless to be sure and probably some mentally ill as well. Some lines at certain times of the day were bad back then (wasn't the 2 called "The Beast From The East" at one time?). Today it feels more random and harder to understand.

Me thinks that the #4 was called the muggers express

The 2 was the Beast.(But unsure if the name was begotten from crime, or just the long trip from then-Zoo Lots to 241st
