|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sun Jul 13 10:17:28 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for July 13 1953 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the very last day of steam locomotive operation on the Lackawanna Railroad. Main Line steam service came to an end on June 5. Steam switchers continued to operate in the Scranton Yard until the coal bunkers ran out. The final run was made by made by 0-8-0 232. 1976 – from The Book of Wrecks A Conrail New Haven Line passenger train composed of M-2 cars crashed into another train while entering the New Canaan Station. One passenger was killed and 25 injured. 1999 – from The Book of Last Runs The lower level track (D3) at the 42 Street Station of the IND 8th Avenue Line is permanently taken out of service. It had been used by the “S” Aqueduct Special from 1959 to 1981 and by southbound rush hour “E” 8th Avenue Express from about March 23, 1970 to April 14, 1975. 2015 – from The Book of Last Runs The visitor’s center in front of Queens Borough Hall is closed due to low patronage. It had been located in R-33 9075 painted in the Redbird II scheme. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

And of course on this date in 1977, the New York City blackout happened.Where I grew up on the upper east side of Manhattan was one of the very first areas to get power back the next morning. Literally across the street from where I grew up they didn't get their power back until late the next evening. |

I was in summer camp in upstate New York when all that went down.In some ways, it was fortunate that the last of the R1-9 fleet was retired in the Spring, and that the Jamaica line was truncated from 168th Street to Queens Boulevard. G-d forbid if those old cars were in service that fateful night when the lights went out. |

That would happen a couple of months later. It apparently turned out the head of Macy's was very concerned about certain kinds of people shopping in the Jamaica location that they left not long after the EL was abandoned as I suspect they apparently needed that done to protect their flagship store in Herald Square because they likely feared certain racist types with money would refuse to shop in Macy's unless they did that based on what is now known about that time. What they should have really done was not only kept the EL, but extended it down Jamaica Avenue much like I would now do with the current (E) and (J) lines, doing it where the line went to around Queens Village on the LIRR (possibly even being directly above the LIRR tracks to that point) and then turned diagonally onto Hempstead Avenue and continued along that to a new terminal at Belmont Park that today would be right next to UBS Arena. |
