Very easy work.Increased light output, much lower wattage. Makes a tree hugger electrician like me smile.

I still remember when the entire Fulton St. line had incandescent lighting on station platforms.

Weren't the stations beyond ENY equipped with florescents right from the start?

I remember when the entire IND was incandescent bulbs. It was dark and dreary. I can remember taking an F train in Brooklyn long after I thought they were all done and 15th/PP and Ft Hamilton Pkwy still had them.

Yes. The last section to Euclid that opened around 1948 had florescents as original equipment. Then Grant in 1950.

At about 7:42 in the classic 1949 Rapid Transit documentary, you see Euclid Ave station with fluorescent lighting. A harbinger of the end of incandescent lighting.

Anyone know the name of the Board of Transportation chairman showing the future to Mayor William O'Dwyer, who nervously chews the frame of his glasses as he contemplates the replacement of incandescent lighting.

That's how I remember the IND. I'd come off an R32 Q train at 34th St, and descend down, and it is a long way down, into the past of darkness. Even though the IND was the newest system it felt like the oldest.

You can see in the next to last pic that the fixtures were being installed at 34th St by then.

I was just checking on Google about the dangers of LED lighting to your eyes. Several ocular experts advise keeping your solar eclipse glasses for use when entering an LED lit station. If you threw them away, a good pair of welding glasses or a full welding helmet should suffice.

So buy LEDS balanced to 2700Kelvin. The issue with many LEDs, much as had been thecase w/fluorescents,thebase light is way too blue. Often a 5000K LED will be both cheaper to buy and produce more limens per watt. The other rating oflight soutces is Color Rendering Index. In the FL tube replacement market tubes w/ catalog ## "7" are 7x cri, "8" 8x cri, and "9" 9x cri. Close reading of the specs will show the 9x cri lamps put out fewer lumens.

"Not Col. Sidney Bingham"

I actually didn't know the name of the nervous white haired man who was showing Mayor O'Dwyer the reports. I was familiar with the Bingham name as he had some of the 1950's Mack buses capable of being converted to ambulances to transport any thermonucleated corpses to a safe lead lined sarcasparagus. So your suggestion led me to here. The fourth photo shows our white haired chairman pointing at the innards of a turnstile which was opened by some dirty looking maintainer who hopes to shake the chairman's hand later.

But the white haired man is identified as William Reid.

I remember when they upgraded the Crosstown to fluorescent bulbs, a huge improvement in the lighting. The old incandescent globes were really dim, could barely read a newspaper. But with the fluorescents you could see how dirty the line's stations were. Aside from that, glad they also fixed the water leaks dripping into the station platform, hearing that on an otherwise quiet station in the dim original IND lighting was really creepy.

The Kelvin measure of a light source is the temperature of a radiating black body that emits that color light.

LEDs obviously don't emit a single frequency (for example, "white" isn't a frequency of light but a blend of a wide range of frequencies). So you can't use frequency or wave length very well when describing an LED.

Having said that much, I don't really understand the definition. Does a black body at 4000 Kelvin really radiate the same spectrum as a 4000 Kelvin LED, or is that just a useful approximation?

I have often though that if LEDs had been developed before or instead of fluorescents, a lot of money could have been saved by simply installing the LED bulbs in the existing light sockets instead of installing completely new light fixtures.
